External HDD - FireWire400, USB 2.0, eSATA.

Do you have firewire on your PC? If so yes. I'd choose firewire over USB2 any day of the week.

I dont have eSATA yet so I wouldnt know about that but by all accounts its an even better solution.

I have the 320 or 350 gig version of that drive. It is rather nifty as the FireWire module is swappable with the USB/ESATA (yes both on the same module) module (it just screws out from the bottom of the drive).

I'd say if you don't have ESATA, maybe spend a bit more and get the firewire version (especially if you intend to copy over large sized files) While USB2 might offer higher data speeds the firewire can sustain it's speeds much better and thus is actually faster when copying over larger files.

And a firewire card for a pc is under R200 I think (i had to get myself one - but soo happy I am)

ps. from what I've noticed, using firewire doesn't suck the life/speed out of a pc like USB does!! - just an observation.

Only in theory ... I have done some tests on my MacBook Pro a while ago wrt the differences between the speed using USB2 and Firewire 400 ... Firewire is still faster (USB overhead kills its own throughput)
 
theoretically esata is 20MB/s faster than firewire800

Somewhere on the back of your machine there will be a long (2cm or so) very thin connector, that is probably the ESATA port. It is fairly new , so check your motherboard specs or manual to be sure.

Landy: Totally agree with you about the USB2 .. hence me saying in theory it is faster, but for real life firewire kicks butt.
 
For real speed, go for firewire 800. But ya, e-SATA is the best. Comparible to normal sata.
