Okay I need to get an external hdd as soon as possible. Looking for something small like the wd passport 120gb, mainly because it will be easier to transport . Digital planet has it for R 1,429.56 incl. VAT. but the wait before i can go get it is just to long. Anything else that you can suggest?

I thought of going for more space but then portability might become an issue. Ah well screw portability , if you can point me in the direction of a big 7200rpm usb 2.0 drive for cheap please do so. [Smile]

it will be used to transfer data from 1 computer to another for in the next weeks, but will probably be used as storage for my photos in the future.

CafeViva (or Javacafe)

has portable drives for cheap cheap.

2.5inch laptop drive 80gig with external hard-drive bay thingie (its very small and light) is around R700+-
(apparently if u go above 80gigs, u need to plug the external hard-drive bay into a wallsocket for extra power)

So if u use that 80gig with the drivebay thingie, u only use USB's normal power. no power plugs

Yip, they are all those things - cheap, small, USB-powered and good IMO.

You can collect from 27 Bond Street (Ground Floor, 1st Building on Right), Arma Park (Complex Name), Ferndale (Suburb), Randburg, Johannesburg, but you must place your order online.

bubble_boy, R1247 for 120gig. for a few bucks more u can get 2x 80gigs 2.5inch portable drives. (cause its portable, u'll prolly only want to carry the USB cable in your hand and the pocketdrive in your pocket) But if u go above 80gigs, u'll need to carry that big 12V transformer with. (usually a transformer thats 80cm long with a extention 1meter power cable = 1.8meter cable) *transformer looks similar to the one u get with laptops*

Indeed. The 80GB are the way to go. Cheaper, smaller, better.

i hear what your saying, but the wesern digital 120gb passport also works with just usb power. haveing 2x 80 gig will take up twice the space of the wd passport drive.

I am very happy with my USB powered WD 120GB Passport drive. WD now have a 160GB version of their Passport drive available. I see Sybaritic also have this (Product description is "Western Digital 160GB 5400RPM Passport Portable Hard Drive - USB") for R1,719.00.

I got an Iomega 500gb USB2.0 for R1900 - (10% discount) == R1710. Only had to wait 2 days for it - R1700 for 500GB, yes, I will wait 2 days :)

So far it is working perfectly.

Isn't it powered externally? Because the USB specs only allow 1amp 5V and I haven't seen any HD's other than 7200RPM drives in the 500GB sizes which usually use about 1-2amps 12v AND 1-2amps 5v

Making it impossible for the drive to run on standard USB power unless it uses 2-3 USB connectors.

Darn, sorry, forgot to say : got from DP (thus the waiting :()

Speed wise - Copying to and from it seems to level out at around 22MB/s - so, not HECTICALLY fast, not really sure how it compares to other external HDD's. AFAIK, USB2.0 == +- 400mbit/s == +-50MB/s.

Using it to store music and movies, so the speed is sufficient for my needs. Whould not wanna put my swap file on there though :)

Yes, it is powered externally. Was that one of the "requested features"? Must have missed it - sorry

Uhm not sure, I kinda skimp read, just asked ;)
But I think he wants a drive that isn't powered externally.

Well, I haven't really decided, it's either get a usb drive now for just transporting data , or, get a decent hdd thats externally powered and use it as my photo storage and editing drive :)
