Keep in mind the speed as well. Those 2.5" drive are alot slower.

And 2.5" drives are more expensive and do not get very big.

It's like a giant flash drive. It is expensive for a 40gb drive, but the ease of use outweighs the cost for me, and should it crash you don't loose that much data

Fair comment. For large and truly portable storage it cannot really be beaten on price or ease of use, and it is nice and small. However, for home use, the powered USB 3.5" enclosures make much more sense.
