External screen display shows and then disappears

I have been happily working for the last month or so with an external HP screen which is connected to my HP Elitebook 8560p. This all in the interests of my posture and my attempts to avoid the MyBB neanderthal look that comes from hunching over a tiny laptop screen (http://tinyurl.com/43qkrb8). That is happily .... until yesterday

For some bizarre reason, when I now connect my laptop and select to view it (using FN & F4) either in duplicate (both the laptop screen and the projector screen) or split between the 2, it displays correctly on the laptop screen but on the external screen it shows for about 3 seconds and then disappears. If I switch off the external screen and then switch it on again, it does the same ... appear for a few seconds and then disappears (although the screen does not go into sleep mode so it must still be hiding there somewhere).

I have sought guidance from the guru (google) and the only useful thing that I can find is to look at the resolution size setup of the projector ... have played with those settings and it still only appears for 2 or 3 seconds with the new size and then the screen disappears. I have tried to unplug the laptop and access the setting on the screen ... but nothing.
Does anyone else have any other suggestions ... please!

Can you try connecting the screen to another computer? That will help to eliminate the computer as the cause. Also try using a different cable. Is it VGA/DVI?

Otherwise it sounds like your monitor is toast.

Thanks for your reply - I have confirmed that it is the monitor by connecting the screen to another computer ... certainly seems that the monitor is working ok when first connected but am just baffled as to why the pic sstays there and then disappears after a bit!? Guess its time to take it in for repairs.
