Hello chaps :)

I have a 2x 500 gig external drives i.e. an Iomega (33648) & Freeagent (the horrid brown one). Both drives were purchased in 2007 if memory serves me. I got a 1TB a few months ago and basically I want to strip the two externals and slot it into the main pc and place the 1TB into the Iomega case.

Can this be done??? Are these drives (the externals) similar to the internal drives, I mean size, shape, etc. I have no clue to this end. Me and HDD enclosures, etc are foreign and I only put a 320gig Seagate Momentus together as an external this weekend - quiet neat if I may add, well they are laptop drives in any case.

Yep I know that placing all my stuff on one drive may be a bit risky, but can you guys please advise me further.

Your thoughts are, as always, appreciated :). Thank you.

Cheers :)

PS. I got 4 drives in the main pc @ the mo, I'm not sure if another 2 can go in. Possibly one for now.

It can be done though you'll need to use a converter to plug PC cables into laptop drives, try NCST in springfield park for that, also you'll need to know if they are SATA or IDE and get mounting brackets.

New PC's can generally take a total of 6 drives including optical drives.

They are all standard drives so they will work. Just check the connector type - ide or sata.

Check the hard drive interface to see if it's SATA or PATA (IDE) - I think that the Iomega 33648 is 3.5" SATA, so as long as your 1TB hard drive has a SATA interface (see pics below for the drive connector type) then you're A-for-away.

The SATA 3.5" hard drive on the left has "card-edge connectors" for the data and power, whereas the PATA (IDE) 3.5" drive on the right has the "pin connector" which has 40 pins in 2 rows - another view below, with the SATA drive on top...
