External tv card?

Hi guys,
do any of you guys have experience with external tv cards?
i am looking for something i can use to record tv signals through my laptop.
Or does anyone have advice for capturing and recording tv schools through a laptop

Do you want to record from video output or from cable?
Do you have a cable box?

You should also consider copy protection. Video card will refuse to record protected signal.
