Hi there

Can I buy any make of external USB DVD writer without having to worry about the insides?

Meaning that, should the DVD writer itself pack up, I can just purchase an internal IDE DVD writer and replace the faulty unit with the new unit?

My main issue is that the DVD writer on my wife's laptop is starting to give issues, and I don't want to purchase a new unit if I can get an external DVD writer instead.

USB speed is not an issue at this stage. :)

Regards

Just get a hdd enclosure and slap an IDE writer in it Ook. works a doozy. Just dont try to install an OS off it :D

it works like a charm, just re-installed my eee pc , os from it without any hassles.

I want to install an OS off it. :)

Unfortunately. :)

Ooo..I had problems before trying to install an OS via an external CD/DVD writer.

The OS was ubuntu and the default LIVE CD did not work because it was too slow and the live cd did not have any chance of loading and running properly. I eventually solved it by rather using the alternate CD which has the text only installer.

Mind you, the laptop was an old HP/Compaq laptop.

Good luck :)

adapting old external writers is also no problem, as you can swop out the internals,

I used an old hp 1xdvd writer, yes it was one of the first ones, unscrewed it and transplanted my new benq 20x unit into it, without any hassles.

I have a SAMSUNG External DVD writer, I installed an OS using it, but I thing the PC has to support booting from USB else it won't work.

As for swopping it with an inter drive if it goes faulty, it should be possible. I haven't open up my drive but it looks like you can.

Now... for how long will IDE CDRom units be manufactured still?

I won't be impressed if I would be to buy an external CDRom unit (IDE) and the IDE standard is replaced by SATA stuff...

My gf's dog-chewed DVD/CDRW drive got to be too much of a pain so I just replaced it with an internal DVDRW - so much easier than having something external to futz around with.

Tried installing a standard DVDRW into a laptop? :D

That's why I'm looking at an external unit. :)

When operating MiLANO not properly, it might cause the player can not be shut down normally. If hard drive has stopped working but power light is still on, please unplug the power connector from the back of the player and plug it again.

:D:D:D:D

Engrish, as she's spoken :D

Interesting concept, by having an IDE/SATA connector for both types of hard drives.
