Hi

i have a external usb hard drive, sometimes it just doesnt come up in windows and sometimes it does, when it doesnt i check under manage storage ect its not thier, how come it does it sometimes and not all the time??

any ideas???

Hell, it could be many things. I have had trouble ( recognition, like you, and copying errors ) plugging external drives into USB cards with VIA chipsets. I'd check that the drive is powering up properly, check the cable, try another USB port, try the drive on a different PC.

Try this:

In Device Manager, expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers"

Open the "USB Root Hub" properties, and select the "Power Management" Tab. DeSelect "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

Do it with all the "USB Root Hub" enties.

that does work either, it does it to all usb ports and on different pc's, the hard drive is spinning up fine. just not coming on screen ie autorun or pc seeing it...

If it is the drive, the suggested setting will not help.

Does the drive use external power or the 5V over the USB. I prefer external power.
