External USB share Server 2003

Hi Guys

I have a strange problem sharing a external USB drive in server 2003.

Sometimes the network share is just empty even thou the drive is working. I can access the drive with the $ share fine.

The share is also mapped to a network drive on client computers but the drive is also empty when clicking on it.

This only happens sometimes not always.

Any ideas?

Wha ? using an external usb drive to store data is a very bad idea. I would rather use a NAS (network attached storage) device if I have to use an external drive.

Why are you using an external drive to access data neways ?

NAS is too expensive. When I archive stuff from the main drives it gets backed up to tape and stored on the USB drive. So when users need to access it every once in a while I don't need to restore it from tape.
