Civil rights group AfriForum is seeking a court order to prevent Eskom from initiating electricity supply cuts and extra load shedding on defaulting municipalities.

It won't necessarily be those people who get cut. The people who will suffer most is the people who have been paying their rates and taxes.

Reading satanboy's remarks almost makes it clear to me that he is one of the dwellers not paying for electricity. He obviously does not care if electricity is cut. If he did pay he would have had a serious issue with the fact that he may soon be expected to keep paying electricity while eskom does not provide any. He probably is used to washing in a small bucket outside his shack, then cooking the water and drinking it.

I am not. I support Afriforum in this regard. I pay may electricity. I do not care what the municipality does with it. This is a civil matter between eskom and the municipality and I am sure the courts will side with that.

Of course its a civil matter, and the contract between Eskom and the municipality will allow Eskom to interrupt supply for non-payment.

What is going to happen is that the Municipality will still charge property taxes, water, and all those little nice extras on your bill. One such municipality already threatened to increase these fees by 10 000% if Eskom goes this route.

Besides this, if eskom stops power, water providing systems will go down too. This is a basic human right thing eskom must be prepared to tell the court no human being is entitled to. The moment they do this, I do believe that we are in for a nasty ride.

Lastly, if the court agrees and find that clean water is not a basic human right a person is entitled to, and power goes off - in 3 days the government will be facing a full-blown civil war against its own people -- their current voters.

Don't think this will ever happen in any event. Eskom does not stand a fighting chance.

Eskom has started sending out notices to towns last week, informing communities it plans on implementing extra load shedding or cutting electricity supply to some towns from June 5 2015.

Even if that does not turn out to be the case, load shedding does affect the economy. Increased loadshedding increases the effect. Not very hard to understand.

Cut them off, reduce peak time load shedding in more economically active areas. Makes sense to me.

I wish they would. But you'll probably find the anc won't let them. Will cost them Gauteng next year if they haven't already lost it.

No matter how you look at it, there will be many voters in the townships to be affected that will not vote for the government, this may also lead to a huge drop in support for the anc. This is the time other political parties must jump in for new voters, which they definitely will get.
