Extra Molex Connector Next To PCIeX

Okay here's the deal and nobody can seem to explain exactly how it works.

Client has a Gigabyte board with a Molex Connector next to the PCI-Express 16x slot - As far as I understand this provides more power to the graphics card...

but...

1.) Do you only need to connect the molex if the psu has a 20Pin ATX power connector

2.) Do have to connect it if the psu has a 24Pin ATX power connector

3.) What happens if you are using a graphics card that already has its own molex connector

4.) What if you have a graphics card like 7600GT that does not require a molex connector

:confused: me confuzed now
 
This is what the manual reads..."Connect the molex connector as per your system configuration" ...wow ..that really helped much.

I read this on another site

The D925XCV motherboard uses the new 24-pin ATX12V connector rather than the traditional 20-pin connector. You can use an older 20-pin ATX12V power supply with this motherboard, but if you do, you should also connect a Molex connector from the power supply to the Molex alternate power connector on the motherboard

but a buddy of my has to connect his molex and 24pin otherwise he gets a bluescreen on startup...

me still confuzed :confused:
 
So do you use the new (normal thesedays I belive) 24-pin ATX12V connector?

The big connection from your PSU to the Mobo.

If not I suppose you will need an extra molex to the mobo, nothing to do with the PCI-E from what you posted. (EDIT: I mean from the link you posted, sounds like a mobo power port)

It is a mobo power port ... and it states PCIeX 12V

Darkwater i'm not sure what you mean? A mb usually have 2 ports on it for power. The 4 port one and the 20pin/24pin port. Is there another on for the graphic card on the motherboard?
 
i think it will only apply if u have 2 cards in the pci-x slots
 
the intel d925xcv board mentioned above does indeed have a regular 4 pin molex connector. this is to supply extra power to the pci-e slot, IF you are using a high powered card AND IF you are using a 20pin psu.

1x4 molex next to the 2x2 atx12v connector, for extra input.


the d955xbk has an additional 4 pin molex connector on the mb also, but this is to power lights etc, and is switchable in the bios.

1x4 molex near the blue sata ports. also, 1x4 molex by the 4x2 eps12v connector
the 975xbx/xbx2 also has this connector.

so, one is for input, and the other is for output, so, we cant draw any sort of generic conclusions from this info, so lets not guess about this gigabyte connector.

if you are sure the connector is for the gfx power, then it would probably be the same as for d925xcv/955/975...if the card is low power, then just ignore the connector, or if you are using 24pin psu, ignore the connector. if the card has it's own connector, then ignore the connector on the motherboard.

pci-e, not pci-x

the second one.

Is the 4 pin molex by the CPU? Then you need to plug it in.
