Extra pc on windows 7 network - should I use Linux on it?

Well, after a lot of fiddling with Mint, I re-installed it from scratch.

After the restart I updated Mint, then went into network, into the workgroup, clicked on the pc with the shared folder, and I could open the folder. So basically I had to change no settings in Mint since I installed it, it worked out-of-the-box.

Now I just have to install the network printer and everything works fine. :)

Thanks for all the help all!

Just some feedback. Once the Linux machine is connected to the network, all the Windows 7 pc's experience lag. When you try to open a folder on the shared directory, everything hangs for 10 to 15 seconds, which is really frustrating. We then switched of the Linux pc, and tested the other win7 pc's on the network, and there was no lag. Conclusion: the linux pc is creating the lag.

So we have to install windows on this extra pc - as it is not worth while to spend more time trying to figure out why there is lag. It takes a lot of time trying to get an answer on internet...

Was a good exercise at the end. :)

It might be that the nmb daemon is not installed on the linux box and the Windows PCs are sending requests to it but timing out because the service isn't sending any info back. Not sure how this works on Debian/Mint systems but on Centos you have to start it manually and isn't run automatically when starting samba.

Just an quick question....why if you have all pcs running windows 7.....wanna change 1 new pc to linux? Yes linux is great but i wouldnt i would keep it the same and simple.
