I posted this on DSTV forum, so I thought I'll post here as well for more advice ...

I'm soon to be DSTV subscriber if I can get the installation sorted.

I'm not sure but doing research on installation costs I'm bit confused.
Game currently has special for R500 (decoder + dish + install)
Now I checked around for extraview installations and best price I got was R1500.
For that price I can have 3 Games installs

Why would the price be three times?
All I see is a twin lnb + extra decoder.
heartbeat cable is nothing special is it?

I'm tempted to go for the game installation, buy twin lnb + decoder elsewhere and hook it up myself?
Am i missing something here that would justify 3 x single view install price?

i was thinking of self install as well.
Best price i see in CT (new) is R350 for decoder.
the twin lnb is R220.
Dish another 200..
sundries - cables + connector ?? not sure..
That already up to R1120 without sundries.

And then I have to struggle to get the dish aligned by having the wife call out from bedroom window.

In fact I'm now even thinking of taking two game specials, and then simply connect heartbeat cable. THat setup would cost me R1000. Messy, but R500 cheaper.

I just don't get it... single lnb R50, twin lnb R220

Change you calculations a bit the R1500 does not include a decoder.

If you have a single view installed already, its very easy for you to do a DIY upgrade to xtraview, if you have the time and a little patience, i found the trickets part is swaping your old lnb for the twin, you just have to make sure the lnb is exaclty placed how the old one was, the resy is just laying wires

did an HD PVR and Xtraview installation myself, although I got a great sense of satisfaction out of doing it, by the time I'd finished crawling in and out of the ceiling up and down onto the roof more times than I could count and on a nice hot summers day I would happily have paid someone else R1500 to do it for me whilst I sat drinking an ice cold beer :D

Go for the 2 x Game special. Then you have 2 decoders as well. The only thing you will have to line up is the new LNB, as the dish is already lined up by the installer. I am sure if you make a deal with the installer (he keeps the one dish and the 2 single LNB's and provide you with a dual LNB at discounted prioce), and he does the installation for you.

that's my thinking as well willie-v
it makes no sense whatsoever.
If I had two dished with single LNB / one dish with twin LNB, the amount of work involved is about the same, or even les for the twin LNB.

ok so i'm going for the 2 x game vouchers.
but the installer wants to charge me R350 for the heartbeat cable - WTFrikedel
I'm a missing something here. I thought it's just a normal RF cable?

Does that include installing the heartbeat cable? If so, labour's not cheap.

Heartbeat is a plain old RF cable. Depending on how you set it up, you could need a DC block (standard DSTV extraview setup). I dont use one because I don't use the TV eyes, I have remote blasters. Also the HD decoder needs 2 lnb inputs, the 1131 needs 1. So you will need a splitter for the 3 LNB inputs (4 if you have an SP PVR).

If you are using 2 X 1131 decoders (not sure if that works in extraview, neva needed to know ;)) then theoretically you would only need a dual LNB. One for each decoder.

yep that what I'm getting. 2 x 1131 decoders. No need for HD / PVR right now.
swopped the one dish and 2 single lnb for twin lnb.
Entire setup gonna cost me R1000 with dish aligned and all. Just have to setup the heartbeat cable myself, if current cable does not work too well - there is a splitter involved.
