Anybody watched anything regarding this? In the states these people buy thousands of dollars worth of groceries (bulk-bulk purchases) and thanks to coupons the cost is reduced to a rediculous amount. A show I watchd yesterday (not sure which channel, one of the food/life ones) had some lady who spent over $2,000 and walked away only paying about $180!!

I remember coupons used to be quite (like pages in the newspaper) big but haven't really looked out for them recently, any local extreme couponers here? Given the increased cost of living, it would be great to see GroupOn etc moving in on grocery retailers rather than select items.

I think in South Africa they would limit the amount of coupons per purchase, and they also don't have any double up policies which seems to be how these people take advantage.

I reckon I would be quite good at getting free groceries if we had a similar situation to the US. But alas, no free things in SA. :(

Saw one episode where these guys buy stuff and give most to charities/shelters, they buy thousands of dollars of stuff and do not pay a single cent for it!

I would so do that if it was available in this country. You can actually run a profitable business like this, whatever you get you flog at 33-50% of the price.

This is the reason why it doesn't exist in South Africa ;)

It just makes me so mad...we honestly get nothing for free in this country. Had I never seen the program "Extreme Couponing", I would have been none the wiser and just carried on shopping and paying full price other than the usual shop specials of course. I have sent emails to several manufacturers like I&J, McCanns, Purina, Colgate and more, with absolutely no luck at all. They either completely ignore the email or just simply say "We do not offer coupons". Perhaps our problem as South Africans is that we always just accept things. Well I am not prepared to do this any longer. I am sure that if we all stand together and keep knocking on their doors, they will have to open it at some stage and listen. I think we should continuously send emails to the manufacturers asking for coupons even if this means we email them every week, until we drive them crazy. An email from one person may not interest them, but emails from 100 000 people may get their attention. I am even going to email the Head Offices in the USA if necessary. Why should America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and I am sure other countries too, benefit from this and NOT South Africa?

Thats nice...

You can move to the USA or anywhere else that has coupons like that... we don't, accept it and move on...

1 person can email I&J or 100000 can email I&J, they don't give rocks... you will still buy their product at the end of the day.

Not necessarily, sometimes I will only buy a product BECAUSE I have a coupon for it. I recently got a whole stack of Dove shower gel coupons and now will only buy those products until the coupons are used up, then its back to the cheapest etc. Manufacturers should realize that in this economy, they would be more inclined to sell their product if they gave a little too I suppose.

This is exactly the problem. Why should we have to move countries? Perhaps, if you have a high paying job, saving money is not a priority. However, when you have lost your job and only have a single income in the home, your focus changes and saving money becomes a necessity. I am not prepared to just "move on" as you put it. And I also do not agree, if I&J are not prepared to provide discounts, I will NOT purchase their products. I will buy what I can afford or what I have coupons for.

1. In SA, we do not refer to coupons. We call it vouchers :)

2. We do not have nearly as big a voucher system as they do in the US for example. One would never be able to buy e.g. a trolley full of groceries for free as they do in that show the OP refers to.

+1

My solution thats currently working for me is to shop at Checkers & Shoprite. They always have some sort of buy 1 get 1 free & their free airtime is a bonus. And the prices of those items is never inflated compared to a similar deal at PickNPay for example.

Check these ones for example, buy 2 VO5 shampoos for R16-99 and get R10 free airtime. Buy 1 Johnsons cream for R17-99 and get R5 free airtime!

Its not much, but its airtime I didnt have to popout extra money for, so it works for me :)

My family lives in New Zealand and I asked them whether they have coupons in NZ. They do and in fact have told me how often they receive coupons at fast food restaurants like Burger King and KFC where they buy one meal and get one free. We appreciate that nothing is for free but the manufacturers in SA can surely provide coupons/vouchers to provide some relieve!!!

I have seen coupons but only for certain type of products cleaning products, Vanish, Omo, Doom etc.

Never seen coupon or grocery items but food items are at least regularly on promotion.

With your kak attitude, why would any supplier want to change.

Look at the difference a couple of thousand people made with the Etoll saga.

And irrespective of whether we win the battle or lose the war, the fact is South Africans are finally learning to say enough is enough!

Hello!!! Is there anyone who would like to talk about this matter any further? I would like to start a facebook page called Extreme Couponing South Africa, there we could talk about taking action and start Couponing, the one who says they don't need this, is lying to themselves, reality is ... we could all do so much more by saving on groceries, and all have a better lifestyle by doing so.
Any comments ???

WTF is with all the 1 post wonders? someone REALLY needs some coupons :p
