Hi guys and girls

I posted this on TheHubsa and they suggested i come here. I would be very grateful if anybody can give some advise.

Yesterday I received a call from Vodacom that my data account (1gb a month) is at about 23GB / R20,000. We keep track of our usage and had some data build up over the past few months so we let the data go to 5Gb as indicated by that program that the dongle runs of.

When they contacted me they told me the account was still active and using data although the pc was off. I have since stopped the account.
They are currently busy with an internal investigation.

Has anybody on the Hub ever had a similar experience? If so, what are my options? Obviously paying R20k for Data usage was not planned so any advise would be appreciated.

Your problem was getting data from vodacom.

Its pretty apparent by now that they have a nasty OOB shark.

R200k?? Hell thats crazy. Sorry to sound stupid, but what is a OOB shark?

Haha okay still feeling stupid.
Is basically just high rates or are there people behind the scenes stealing?

WindowsUpdates
Smartphones
Spambot virus/trojan
Self-replicating virus/trojan
Torrents
Unsecured wifi access point

All of the above can chomp your data. Anytime, anyplace. And they're not shy about it either.

They are just unable to cap you once you reach your limit if you're a contract user, like they can do instantaneously when you run out of airtime on pay-as-you-go.

OOB is the acronym for Out of Bundle. The rate at which OOB data is charged is 2/MB which is absolutely absurd. Its just referred to as the OOB Shark because the practice is shady at best.

OOB Shark =Out of Bundle Shark - what you got bitten by. Basically once your bundle runs out the out of bundle cost is what they charge you normally R2 per MB.
As for the 200K bill i'm not kidding theres a thread here on MYBB about it

This sucks. So basically, theres nothing i can do wrt the R20k bill? They will just recon its my fault?
What about the fact that the Vodafone application that the dongle runs from said usage was about 5gb?

Which kind off excludes everything in your list except Unsecured wifi access point.

I don't have wifi so "Unsecured wifi access point" is also not applicable...

Similar thing happened to me about a year ago, but it was my sim card data, a sim card I never ever used. Vodacom called me to say my data bill was R9000 and they can track all the sites that were visited so the sim card was in use. It was obviously hacked or stolen. I reported it and blocked it but by then it was too late and I was liable for payment, they didn't really care about my situation they just forced me to pay. Never ever used them again and wont ever. One of my worst experiences to date.

Another experience was when they did not cap my account as I asked and my bill ran up a few thousand due to OOB, customer service stinks at vodacom, they are incompetent, never do what you ask and never of any help when you need.

OP they are going to make you pay whether you do it now or later, they wont compromise and your credit record will be on the line.

I simply cannot understand how the cellular operators continue to get away with this ****!

Its not looking good...but ill wait for Vodacom to complete its internal investigation...not that i think they will find anything in my favor, but at least my money can stay in my pocket for longer (this off-course being theoretical money)
