I recently cancelled my contract on Neotel and applied for a telkom line on Friday. I used to have a prepaid phone in my house and had to change ownership into my name, and then convert it into an ADSL line. Today they phoned me to confirm it has been done. 4 days! Even applying for it on the phone was a since - it literally took like 5 minutes. I cannot believe how much they have changed recently. Seriously Telkom - well done.

Sadly this is the exception rather than the rule. I have been waiting almost two months for my PSTN line to be converted to ADSL. The usual excuses were sent my way:

1) Sorry we made a mistake with your order, we ordered a new service for you rather than a conversion of your existing line to ADSL. Result = Order cancelled, new order made out - go to the back of the que.

2) Sorry there are no spare ports in your exchange - maybe something will become available in the next 30 - 40 days.

3) Sorry your last 3/4 mile is fibre - a DSLAM is required, and there is none available - cant tell you when one we be available, maybe in the next financial year.

If it had not been for a friendly soul with connections in Telkom on this forum, I would have got nowhere. Hopefully today I will get a suprise!!

If the infrastructure is there, they are pretty quick to get you setup and start you paying ASAP. It does make business sense.

But, if the infrastructure is not in place, now a myriad of other factors come into play that ultimately determine whether the infrastructure will be put into place.

i.e. If you're moving, and you want ADSL, find out if the infrastructure exists and has capacity for you at the destination before you move there.

What was the reason for you terminating your services with Neotel? I also reverted to Telkom because of Neotel's poor latency and slow speeds, amongst other reasons. I will give Neotel a second look once they get ADSL but for now they can keep their wireless. (Any idea when they will will offer ADSL?) Is your experiences with Neotel the same as mine?

I am amazed that your experience is pretty much the same as mine. I also started off with good speeds which ended in a trickle, regardless of the time of day. I had their premium uncapped account which is useless if you have to download at a few bytes a second. (Possibly something to do with the saturation of their towers). It was also a nightmare to get out of the contract. They billed me for 3 months after cancellation and I was never reimbursed. No doubt that ADSL is way superior than any wireless connection like Neotel, iBurst you name it. ADSL is fast, reliable and stable. I can also vouch for very fast service from Telkom when I moved my line last month. However, seems we are by far the minority and Telkom needs to shape up on service delivery considering all the complaints posted here.
