Extremely slow internet only in evenings - vumatel

Does anyone else experience extremely slow fibre in the evenings? I was sure this was an ISP problem but I have changed to another ISP this month and it does the exact same thing. It seems every night after about 6 30 to 7pm the 20mb connection becomes completely erratic to the point where streams even battle at low resolution.

This problem is driving me crazy. It normally happens in the middle of a stream where it will be flying at 1080p for over an hour. And the minute evening kicks in it starts buffering every 5 seconds.

I have tested with a VPN hoping it might just be a routing problem or QoS but it does not help at all. Please can someone let me know what to do about this. Vumatel keeps telling me to contact ISP and I am certain it cannot be an ISP issue.
 
Also experiencing streams buffering so much as to be unwatchable. Fairlands Jhb area. I logged a call with CoolIdeas ISP, support gave some suggestions but no solution to the problem as of yet. Changed router, ethernet connection, switch, etc. Speed also drops drastically in the evening (erratic, but from 50mbs to 1mbs in short bursts) My final step will be to call them to the premises to see for themselves. Also chanhed from WebAfrica to CoolIdeas, thinking that might have helped but nopesville.
 
Can confirm not just Vumatel - I'm on Octotel in Cape Town and have noticed this since about March. Starts at about 20:00 or 20:30. Streaming via VPN from US servers and have tried everything without success. I'm convinced some throttling is happening on international traffic but you won't get anyone admitting it. Local speed tests look fine. PS - don't trust speedtest.com - use fast.com which runs off Netflix servers so you'll get much more accurate results specific to streaming.

Yup, Netflix/Youtube is fine, non-netflix stream is just a no-go. I also suspect throttling although it is vehemently denied. (runs fine on openserve though)
 
Seems like it's pretty common so why is it not getting fixed. The reason we get fibre is to get away from buffering and shaping yet ADSL performs better than this? Complete waste of money to have a usable internet until 5pm
 
I had a issue like that with youtube videos, on Vumatel with Rocketnet, but before I logged a call it seemed to have solved it by closing the browser and opening it up again. 1080P doing about 9Mbps, then suddenly down to 1Mb with buffering. Closing and opening the browser solves it, happened twice over the last month so not that big of an issue for me yet

You guys should post your locations too, otherwise we'll never know if it's localised, neither will any ISP reps reading the thread.

We have the odd problem with Vuma/CI in the evenings.

As a matter of interest we NEVER/EVER get over 50Mbps on a 100Mbps line but that doesn't really worry me. Might try downgrading to 50Mbps - will probably get 25 :D :D
 
Probably more your ISP than Vumatel. Try an international speedtest and youtube video ( You can have two "bad" isp)
Also "many" pirate sites buffers
 
What is likely happening is, is ISP's simply can't keep up with demand during peak hours because they do not have the capacity to do so..

ISP's will get their internet (i.e international traffic) from some place or the other, be it Telkom IPC Internet Solutions etc..

They pay for a specific amount of capacity for all their end users and because this is expensive, most tend to run the capacity 'hot', meaning they will purchase just enough to hopefully cover them during peak hours..

However, demand is always outstripping supply and ISP's will wait till the bitter end before giving in and buying more capacity..

Some ISP's are probably better at managing this than others though and people move ISP's all the time so this is an up and down issue constantly..

When you have to buy upstream capacity in US dollars you would also wait till the last second.

Not here to question ISP's decisions on making users suffer to the last minute, just to share some insight into what may be causing everyone's terrible on-peak experience..
 
I really don't think it is an ISP issue because the few people in the complex I have spoken to also have the same problem and the ISP for all of us is different. There is no packet loss during off peak but then it happens during peak? Also I wouldn't call twitch a pirate streaming site either. I can stream twitch in source quality up until 6pm. From then on I can only stream on low where u cannot see a thing

I see this thread is quite old, But im experiencing the same, Vumatel fiber, Telkom is my isp line 50 meg down and 20 meg up, when it comes to 7pm in the evenings my upload speed drops from 20 meg to less than 1meg making it unable for me to broadcast my Radio show, has anyone found a solution to this problem, as this is becoming a huge problem as i now can not broadcast my Radio show from my home studio. I've spoken to telkom, they advise me to ph vumatel when i ph vumatel they refer me back to telkom, this is Absolute BULLSHIT. Ive attached some pics so that you can see how my upload speed drops just before 7pm and after 7pm

Very Good Point...we should always post our locations ...in fact it surprises me how many members do not show their location already in their profile info...My BB should make this mandatory when members register...please.

Change maybe your isp? One that will not mess you around.
 
I have the same issue. Every day between 19:00 and 22:00 my speeds go from 200mgbs to 30 to 60 but very up and down. And it's not the ISP it's Vumatel.

This has been going on for me 5 months now.

I noticed the same in the last month. Mine went to 4mgps (50 mgps line)
