Bahrain Grand Prix called off

The Bahrain Grand Prix has been postponed because of the ongoing unrest inside the state. A statement this afternoon issued on behalf of Bahrain's Crown Prince said Bernie Ecclestone had been advised of the decision earlier in the day.

The announcement referred to a postponement rather than a cancellation but it is hard to see how the race could be rescheduled inside an already busy end-of-season calendar.

"At the present time the country's entire attention is focused on building a new national dialogue for Bahrain," the Crown Prince said. "Although Bernie Ecclestone had graciously made clear that a decision on the race was entirely Bahrain's to make and was not yet required, we felt it was important for the country to focus on immediate issues of national interest and leave the hosting of Bahrain's Formula One race to a later date.

"After the events of the past week, our nation's priority is on overcoming tragedy, healing divisions and rediscovering the fabric that draws this country together; reminding the world of the very best that Bahrain is capable of as a nation once again united."

The final round of testing which was set to start on March 3 has been cancelled as well. The teams are due to meet in Barcelona later today to decide an alternative location.

"It's sad that Bahrain has had to withdraw from the race," Ecclestone told the BBC. "We wish the whole nation well as they begin to heal their country. The hospitality and warmth of the people of Bahrain is a hallmark of the race there, as anyone who has been at a Bahrain Grand Prix will testify. We look forward to being back in Bahrain soon."

The season will now start with the Australian Grand Prix on March 27.

:(

Longer to wait, but hey, judging by last years Bahrain GP, we are not going to miss that much excitement. I wonder where they will insert an extra test session?

I think the tyres will be an interesting dimension in this years season.

Pity we have to wait so much longer for the next race, but it was inevitable that the race would be called off. I also do not see it being slotted in later in the season.

Barcelona to host final F1 test

The final test of the pre-season will take place at the Barcelona circuit following the cancellation of the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Bahrain was scheduled to host the test from the start of next week, but with the news that the Sakhir event has been withdrawn, teams have decided to do all their winter testing in Spain.

The Barcelona test will take place on March 8-11, some two weeks before the start of the season in Australia.

It's going to be interesting to see how the tyres go when they finally reach some hot tracks.

Cricket is kuk boring though ;)

Heh. Only did the installation myself on Saturday. I'm still befuddled with how much detail one can see on the pitch. :o Still, I wouldn't call the WC boring, or any limited overs match for that matter. I'll agree regarding 5-days matches, though.

Besides, when the cricket does get tiresome, I can watch repeats on Discovery HD... in HD.

Just yanking your chain :)

Yeah, easier to justify HD these days, only had 2 channels when I got mine going and awesome now we are finally going to get the F1 in HD. Really enjoyed the MotoGP in HD last year. I have already cancelled all engagements on GP Sundays this year...

Haven't had any for 15 years. :D

Continuing the slightly OT track for a moment - I'm really impressed with the 2P PVR. The standard channels all look much better through HDMI and I never realised that the PVR remote has universal functions; just being able to switch off the decoder, TV and amp with 2 buttons, and having the DSTv remote control the amp's volume is such a joy. No more nearly wetting myself when the wife switches to a channel with DD 5.1 sound at 3 times the volume we were watching. :)

How much was hd installation? my projector can do 720p but i can only afford the decoder, if the installation is like another 1.5k i dunno hey.

Could the universal remote also turn off my projector cause when they took my playstation they stole my remote for my projector.

Did the installation myself - Makro sells a twin LNB (which you need for the PVR to work 100%) with 20m of coaxial cable for R400-odd. Clambered onto the roof, took out the old LNB - which had failed and was the catalyst for the whole exercise - popped in the new one, drilled through the wall & ran the extra cable from the dish to the decoder. Apart from a phonecall to Multichoice to get the new decoder activated that's it.

I'm not a hundred percent sure on the projector - I'll edit this post in a couple of minutes when I find the .pdf with the codes for the gadgets the PVR remote can control...

edit

here it is. I'd think if your projector's manufacturer is on the list you're in with a good shot, but I'd ask a mate to test out his remote. The procedure to program it is also on the web...

You might still get lucky, after all you only need a button that'll switch it off. Remotes often do things they shouldn't; when we first got M-Net many, many moons ago I remember some arb button on the remote being able to switch our TV on and off. When programming the thing there's an option to run through all the codes it can transmit... something somewhere might work. ;)
