F1 2012 thread

You totally overlook the whole point of late braking being an advantageous skill. You also totally overlook the fact that drivers are driving within themselves to get their cars across the line in a decent position. And I don't see how an engineer coming on the radio and telling you to slow down to meet your tyre target is a skill. ''We know you can probably go half a second to a second a lap faster but we don't want you to because these cr@p tyres will disappear from under you in about 5 laps at this speed''. That is not skill. That is Pirelli making a tyre that wears unreasonably fast to meet Bernie Ecclestone's demands for a more exciting product.

Essentially, Alonso has to become a neutered version of himself to achieve something. No ballsy late braking and no thrashing the car around the track. It's all about backing off and going easy. You call it adapting, I call it not driving to maximum ability.

Braking is more a skill now, it was easy if your equipment was good before. It's more 'ballsy' as you put it to brake late now than it was before - Alonso admitted that much.

This is like the BEE version of F1 :p.

Giving less skilled / technologically advanced / financially disadvantaged teams near equal footing with the superior teams not through assistance but by hampering better teams.

I couldn't put that better

...Except that better teams aren't being hampered any more than poor teams.

Watching the Qualifying on Sky Sports HD Channel on a 55-inch screen.

What a difference. Sky is awesome.

End of Q2 and I can't call it! I have no idea who's going to be on pole...

Vettel takes pole. Looking forward to the race! Might be a bit boring but the start should be good.

Ferrari.. Poor stuff.

The quali king strikes again!!!!!!!!!!!

What a lap, pity we only caught it half way through. Superb stuff. Hamilton hanging in there as usual.

Anyone who says the tyre's are the reason the cars are so close cannot be right, all of the cars were going flat out today and wow so close.

All except Schumi and Alonso. Imagine not getting into the top 10 shootout because of .2 seconds? Bad strategy to not run on softs.

Was watching Vettel's entire lap from Sky race control.. Just pure on board and engine sound :D Great lap.. Saw those purples lighting up on my iPad and knew he would be up there.

Glad Lewis is on the front row once again.. Can't wait to see how the start goes!

Naaa dude .2 seconds is nothing. Some days .2 is enough for second. It was close the top 12 could have got pole but then boom the master strikes :D.

People can say what they like about vettel but he is a genius in quali. Sadly for hamilton if vettel was not around he would be the genius haha but still hamilton is about the only man capable of staying with vettel.

Thank goodness because who wants another shummi situation.

That was quite a quali. Was thinking WTF is Red-Bull doing and then they shock with such a monster lap. Interesting enough Vettel lost about .2 seconds in the final sector. He was up by half a second in the middle sector. Hoping for a better permanence this week than the previous race. GO VETTEL!

Good laps by lots of drivers. Both Force India's in the mix, Pastor in third :O. They really seam to under perform at most races.

So far Lewis is 2 up on Vettel in terms of difference between quali and race result so they're pretty evenly matched, though Vettel is pretty strong in clear air so I'm guessing this for tomorrow:

1. Vettel
2. Hamilton
3. Button

I anticipate a dull race TBH. No overtaking or very little.

Except for the fact that it's the pace that kills the tires ;).

Yup but did you see quali? All teams going flat out and look how close it was. Your theory of the tyre's being the reason they are so close it a bit much considering going going flat out in quali the top 12 were separated by 0.2 seconds.

Race day is about managing your stuff and pushing when you can. The tyre's actually work out well because they also need to manage fuel so when they manage tyre's they are also managing fuel.

That was in reference to better teams being hampered on race day, because they couldn't go flat out the entire race because of the tire management issue. Which in effect put the weaker teams and the stronger teams closer together as the weaker teams didn't have the raw pace to ruin tires as much as the better teams to begin with.

So teams that have poor aero grip don't overuse tyres? If anything they would be relying more on mechanical grip and will wear the tires out more in the high speed corners.Your theory makes no sense.

When they banned the F-Duct, Red Bulls flex-wings,Renault's mass dampers, Mclaren's auto-box, Mclaren's extra brake pedal, Tyrell's X-wings, Williams 6 wheeler, etc, thats hampering the faster teams. When the rules are the same, it does not.

Raw pace over quali is one thing, but as we have already seen - people are still being lapped, so it's not exactly THAT close. It is close among teams of similar calibre. If raw pace were the decider then Mercedes and Force India would be walking it. Even the last two years, RedBull weren't the team with raw pace - they had the Renault engine, remember. Their aero package did it for them. Designers are now scrambling to fine-tune their packages at the same time that drivers are learning to drive cleverly.

Aero grip translates into mechanical grip. Ultimately, all grip comes from the tyres.

Having said that, the tyres on slower cars might be experiencing more lateral loading due to the lower levels of DOWNforce and that could contribute to faster tyre wear.
