F1 2012 thread

I don't doubt one will grow used to the odd noses quite quickly. Go have a look at F1 footage from a few years back and see how awkward the older cars' low rear wings look.

That being said, that Ferrari does look like a Lego Museum exhibit.

What you talkin' 'bout Willis? ;) I still think the high rear wings are really nasty. For your consideration...

Why wouldn't it be? Last years nose on the MP4-26 was so low it was almost legal for this year.

I mistakenly thought the 625mm bulkhead height was a minimum ... looks like it's actually a maximum height.

As you have mentioned, McLaren seems to have a much lower nose / bulkhead than the other teams

Clearly this Scarbs dude knows a lot more than I do :p

Seems like I wasn't the only one confused (about halfway down that page)

Anyway, I don't think we've seen any of the cars as they will look like on the Melbourne grid in 6 weeks time.

The new McLaren has 2 new features I like, the lower nose and new wing mirrors. Now when Hamilton crashes into everyone else he doesn't have any excuses any more :D

So proud of McLaren.. not going the fugly platypus route :D

Absolutely beautiful.

You won't be so proud when they're running around in last. ;)

And why would they?

McLaren have always had lower noses than the other teams, so they have more knowledge and experience when it comes to that. They'll get it to work fine.

As far as I know last years car was quicker than the Ferrari, which had a much higher nose in comparison.

I've just got a feeling. ;) Byrne had some involvement with the new Ferrari and Red Bull have Newey so McLaren may be hurting badly this year. I am a biased Ferrari fan of course so feel free to disregard. :p

Now I'm not quite sure who this Anderson dude is and what makes his opinion valuable (except that he is some sort of technical analyst at the BBC for whatever that's worth) but here's his take on the McLaren ...

Anderson was not impressed by the McLaren, seeing nothing to have the hairs standing up on the back of his neck, but with the usual caveats and a suspicion that perhaps they were hiding something clever for Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton to exploit.

"The front wing is the same as last year, the nose section and that area of the chassis that looks ugly (on others), they haven't done it," he said.

"And I think they missed a bit there because although it's all small, you've got to exploit every aerodynamic avenue possible.

If he is not retired, that might be a reason he is not employed by the teams. Maybe he just doesnt know enough :P

Hmmm so mclaren are either going to end up with the best car by a mile or a slow ass piece of garbage.

Tell me, does mclaren know how good each of their rivals will be? Is there some sort of marker to work towards? How does it work, do they let each know the expected times or what?

Nope its like a surprise. But they can guess maybe from the features. But its mclaren, no matter what they start as, by mid/end season they will have one of if not the fastest cars on the grid.

Whitmarsh admits to dummy exhausts

Martin Whitmarsh has admitted that McLaren displayed exhausts made of plastic at the launch of its new car as it hid components from its rivals.

The MP4-27 was launched last week in Woking, with notable bulges on the side of the car where the exhaust exits were which appeared to hide the actual configuration. There was also an obvious lack of a complete diffuser, and Whitmarsh confirmed that the car displayed at the launch will not be the same as the car that runs at the first test in Jerez, starting tomorrow.

"The exhaust was made of plastic, you won't see those components in that form again," Whitmarsh confirmed to Auto Motor und Sport. "The car will look different at Jerez to what it looked last week, and a lot different in Australia. At the weekend at Idiada (Spain) we did an aero test where we had a series of news parts that were not on the car at Woking."

Ferrari also admitted that it wasn't displaying a finalised exhaust system, with chief designer Nikolas Tombazis telling La Stampa "There will be a lot of work before the configuration is final", and Force India's Otmar Szafnauer said that it was a sign of the finances available to the top four teams that they can afford to conceal their solutions.

"The big teams have the budget to make these sorts of parts just for the launches," chief operating officer Szafnauer said. "The car seen at our launch is certainly a lot closer to its final configuration than the McLaren or Ferrari."

:D

Boy that redbull looks epic, should be a kick ass car. Mclaren seem more worried about people copying their parts than they are about designing a decent car.

Should be an interesting first race.
