F1 2014 thread

Yep, I think Rosberg needed to have a really strong coffee before getting in the car, it looked as if he fell asleep on the start line.

At least he managed to get back up to second without too much drama ;).

I honestly think Nico just had a bad weekend partly cracking under pressure from hamilton's quick hotlap in quali. Nico admitted looking at his timing during the last lap and thinking "where am I gonna make up time" hence him pushing the envelope too far.

Very happy to see that too :)

Although it is nice to see the most successful team in F1 history finally getting something out of the weekend, I would not get my hopes up as the China GP circuit was very suited to the F14-T. The track was brutal on front tires and the F14-T struggles with the rear tires so by some luck it balanced out for Alonso to be able to do the drive he did.

I wonder if Vettel's ignoring team orders will have repercussions at the top considering that Ricciardo may have missed his opportunity to challenge Alonso thanks to Vettel?
I'm not unhappy that Vettel told them to get lost, but someone higher up might not be happy :)
Vettel is not in it for the team, that's for sure.

Redbull would not hold it against Vettel for the whole reason he is frustrated is that the team cannot produce the car Vettel needs to be the driver he was last year. Ricciardo is on the drive of his career and used to a car with less grip hence him getting away with the current setup. Rumors are Vettel will be getting a new Suzie for Europe.

You guys do realise that this is a very one sided, unfair advantaged, manufacturer season, right?
The other cars may only change to Merc's design for next season.

Hence the reason why either Hamilton or Rosberg will take the championship and Mercedes also the manufacturer win.

Although I entirely agree with you and the FIA looking into this matter. This has always been the tradition in F1 where a somewhat unfair or revolutionary development with the car has always ended up with a 1,2 for the team in the Drivers Championship.

Lots of Ayrton Senna memoirs this week...........RIP the legend.

Ahh yes.. Seems like they joined the team which by no doubt is due to their current good form. I really think the Hulk is a great driving talent. Would love to see him in a winning car to truly see him strut his stuff.

I think they will get there. Its precisely this kind of form that transforms average into above average teams, and it seems they are now enjoying very good momentum.

Always awesome to see an upcoming team working hard and reaping results, rather than a team coming in with big money and taking no 1 spot from the start due to others having developed their engines for them over the years.......ehem, cough, mer..., cough.....

Yes certainly they look the business, lets hope they can keep up with other teams development wise. I personally think Perez is an unnecessary evil, unpredictability and inconsistency ruins him. FI would have been better off with giving a new talent a fighting chance rather than to try and revive an old one.

Weekends without F1 is like Saturdays without a braai. :(

Very cool, though I recall the car looked better from the side than the front before - too much white from the front. Black looks good on an F1 car... wonder how it plays against the cooling?

Don't think it makes a difference. The car also constantly moves through the air so if there was any difference it would be cooled anyway.

Nigel Stepney dies in road accident

The Ferrari mechanic at the heart of the 'Spygate' affair, Nigel Stepney, has died in a road accident at the age of 56.

Stepney had a long career in Formula One, which started at Shadow in 1977 and took him to Lotus, Benetton and Ferrari. He left F1 after his involvement in the 2007 'Spygate' scandal between McLaren and Ferrari, in which he was accused of passing a 780-page technical document to the British team.

He moved to working in sports cars and was an employee for JRM from 2010 up until the time of his death. James Rumsey, the owner of JRM, paid tribute to Stepney.

Williams announces 25% income boost

Williams has announced a 25% increase in income in its financial results from 2013.

The group, which includes the Williams F1 team, increased its overall income to £132.4m last year, up from £105.8m in 2012, while its Earnings Before Interest & Tax (EBIT) went from £5.1m to £12.0m. There was also a 26% rise for the F1 team itself, which it put down to a "special non-recurring sponsorship payment" - likely to relate to the sum believed to have been paid by Venezuelan oil company PDVSA for an early termination of its sponsorship deal in order join Pastor Maldonado at Lotus.

The team also had an EBIT of £11.5m, up from 2012's figure of £8.3m. The figures do not take into account the sale of the Williams Hybrid Power and Williams Technology Centre in Qatar in early 2014.

It represents a big tunaround for Williams after losing £5m in 2012. The return to profit coincides with a return to form at the front end of the grid, plus its new deal with title sponsor Martini.

Hat off to Sir Frank the way he's managed to keep it together over the years, and just keeps on racing.

Legend.

Looking forward to European upgrades for all.

Not too sure why so many teams use Europe to launch the changes, but nonetheless bring it on.

They are not really waiting for Europe but I presume the upgrades from the first in season test will now arrive as well as the setup changes & parts from the last weeks work at the various factories.

The other reason the field is expected to improve is the fact that 90% of the teams are UK based & upgrades will be available much faster due to quicker shipping.

Very impressive portfolio, a real hero he was.

Merc is threatening heavy upgrades to make their car even more competitive from Spain onwards.

I wonder if that's even needed, they have easily won each GP so far with little danger from the field.
