Kimi should not have rejoined going 'balls out' - Lauda

Three-time champion and Mercedes boss Niki Lauda says Kimi Raikkonen only has himself to blame for his accident at the British Grand Prix.

Raikkonen survived a 47G shunt after crashing into the barriers on the Wellington Straight at high speed. He was recovering to the track after running wide at Aintree but lost the rear of the car as he crossed from the run-off area to the grass and back to the track. The accident also took out Felipe Massa and caused damage to Max Chilton's Marussia, who was lucky not to be caught by a tyre flying from Raikkonen's car.

"I have one criticism for today," Lauda said. "Kimi made a mistake, quite simply he went wide, but why does he come in balls out and then crashes? Hopefully nothing happened, but it was unnecessary."

The incident red flagged the race and Lauda said it was also unnecessary to take so long rebuilding the barrier.

Hmmm, not sure about that, Kimi really did the most natural thing to get back onto the track and avoid the barriers.

Yeah, easy in hindsight, but he basically ran out of space and had to jump back into the traffic. Nobody sits at the side and signals they're entering the fray again during a race. I recall he was heading for a barrier when he jumped back on, the fact that the car hit a bump was to blame IMO. I also think rejoining the race while coasting at some slow speed is worse.

Raikkonen rested from Silverstone test
Kimi Raikkonen will sit out of this week's Silverstone test following his big accident on the first lap of the British Grand Prix, but is expected to be back for the German Grand Prix.

He will be replaced by Marussia and Ferrari development driver Jules Bianchi on Wednesday with test driver Pedro de la Rosa on track on Tuesday.

Raikkonen escaped his accident without serious injury, but still registered 47G at the moment of impact. He limped away from the car with bruising to his ankle and legs before being given medical checks at the circuit.

The two-day test at Silverstone starts on Tuesday and will see all the teams back in action ahead of the German Grand Prix in two weeks' time.

Hamilton plays down Rosberg's German allegiance

Lewis Hamilton has poked fun at Mercedes team-mate and title rival Nico Rosberg's allegiance to Germany ahead of his home race at Hockenheim.

Team-mate Rosberg was born to a German mother and Finnish father, 1982 champion Keke, but has spent the majority of his life in Monaco. Despite the fact Rosberg races under the German flag in Formula One, Hamilton does not think this will give him an edge at Hockenheim.

"To be honest Nico has never actually been in Germany, so it's not really his home race," Hamilton is quoted as saying by the Independent. "I remember when we were in karting he didn't stand next to a German flag - ever! We had to go on the start line and all the drivers would stand next to a grid girl.

"They would be holding a flag or a sign saying Hungary or whatever, and he always stood by Monaco. He never stood by Germany. I've known him growing up in Monaco, so I know Monaco is his home."

Despite this, Hamilton acknowledges the fact that Rosberg will be the subject of the pre-race attention in Germany as he was at Silverstone.

Why does this guy always have throw in an ugly 2c. Methinks he is very jealous that all the focus is not on him :)

Yeah outing all that is not really necessary. Does this sound like something a friend would do? Nope..

Which part was ugly? Seemed pretty ordinary banter to me. I'd hardly call that poking fun, unless you want to read what the journo wants you to. Naah guys, leave the contrived gossip for the daily sun.

Easy, you don't really see Nico or any other drivers making constant comments around their co-drivers.

Lewis always has something to say.

I think you mean tabloids always have something to publish. Of course the others have stuff to say, maybe it's just not that interesting ;)
Being part Finish almost guarantees that. Regardless, you can be sure there's an interest in making something out of nothing for the paparazzi... pitting Hamilton against Rosberg is their only hope for action between races.

They do, except that it is not newsworthy. LH is after all the most marketable athlete according to some, and what he says get greater publicity. BTW below is a direct qoute

"....undoubtedly he's German, but he's German, Finnish, from Monaco or whatever. So he'll get that support in Monaco and Germany, and he's always had great support there."

Feel really sorry for Rosberg what a crappy way to go out.Alonso made for some really exciting racing and Button was not to shabby either, all in all one of the better races this season.

Agreed, not a fan of Alonso at all, but I must say that he always makes the best of whatever situation he is in.

Pirelli reveal images of concept 18-inch F1® tyres

Formula One tyre suppliers Pirelli have released digital renderings of what their prototype 18-inch tyres will look like, ahead of testing them at Silverstone on Wednesday.

The Italian manufacturer has developed the low profile tyres, which will be trialled by Lotus on their 2014 car, to provoke debate about whether such rubber should be used in F1 racing in the future.

It has been suggested that running with larger wheels and tyres would lead to greater technology transfer between F1 tyres and road car rubber.

However, Pirelli say they will only progress with the initiative if there is a genuine desire from F1 racing's various stakeholders to follow such a direction.

Alonso was pretty incredible... a bit like how they described Ricciardo vs Vettel.
