It's quali for the sprint. Friday's quali is for Sunday's race. Saturday is basically a mini standalone event.

They are testing these sprint weekends, 6 of them in total across the year, to see if it makes things more interesting not only for Friday and Saturday spectators but also if it makes any difference to ratings.


With the popularity of F1 picking up year on year, I think the FIA wants to make it more entertaining, but the teams are not so fond of it.

And we have to watch qualifying as a repeat, if we can find it, due to work and family's commitments on Fridays. So an essential part of that actual race weekend is effectively dropped for the sake of DtS fans, with a shrot attention span, who can only stay interested in a race for 30 min.
