You can't compare different generations, times were totally different.

Its hard to say how those okes would have coped if they benefitted from modern tech and fitness routines but they were nowhere near as fit as the okes are today.

I reckon this year is going to be all about the most consistent team plus car including driver. It’s too close for just or or the other to make the difference.

Lets first see if he can deal with the pressure of a Max on the first turn.

Most of the time the first lap defines a race.

Schumacher wasn’t at Mercedes to race for wins. He was a development driver. Hamilton owes him for his effort there. Rosberg was trying to get the best result. Schumacher was experimenting.

Schumacher left the sport for 3 years and only returned for 3 and yes, he had improved by 2012 but he didn’t stick around any longer.

Neither has as much pressure as prior years. I don’t think either will take any chances for the sprint win. It’s not worth it. Norris FTW tomorrow I reckon. That said, ego is ego so let’s see.

If Hamilton has a chance it will be in a sprint where the excellence of Ferraris strategy department won't be put on display

It would be even better if we have different drivers winning weekly. Yoh.

One thing that I’ll say is a factor as you age - the fatigue of back to back races. If they had more recovery time I’d say it’s not a factor. Fangio wouldn’t likely have had the same intensity. But there are many factors to being WC.

The thing is they will all catch up like that. Williams could count themselves in the top alongside them, maybe Aston Martin later on. Then its literally down to driver skill and pit strategy to make the difference.

Bortoleto showed last year in F2 that if the dice rolls your way in a field of same performance cars you can literally go from last to first and win. That Monza win of his was mad!

We forget Schumi was very competitive and would unlikely have accepted a "development driver" role when he came on board. He genuinely thought he would win an eighth World Championship when he signed. His neck issues probably also made it harder for him to be competitive regularly.

Now, there was also something off about his 06 retirement and it seemed a bit forced. Apparently it was because Ferrari weren't offering what he wanted. I do think he'd have won WDC 8 in 07 had he stayed.

If Schumi had stayed on and driven the same Merc Hamilton dominated with, he'd probably have got a few wins here and there but he'd not have had the consistency to challenge Nico or for the WDC.
