How did you do it?
I found this points simulator built for F1 - https://www.formula1points.com/simulator/points-simulator/1980
- Points: 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1
- 1 pt for the fastest lap but only if the driver is inside the top-10
Prost: 1980-1991, 1993
2509.5 points (5th all-time)
He also wins a 5th World Championship by beating Lauda to the 1984 title by 2.5 points.
Senna: 1984-1994
1874 points (7th all-time)
Schumacher: 1991-2006, 2010-2012
3961 points (2nd all-time, behind only Hamilton)
He potentially loses the 1994 title to Hill as the current points systems would have meant Hill wins the championship by finishing behind Schumacher in Adelaide, so there is a chance Hill doesn't even try and overtake for the win and isn't shunted out of the race by Michael. Schumacher does still try and crash into Villeneuve in 1997 though as finishing behind Villeneuve in that race would see him lose the championship by 1 point.
I remember in the 80's at one stage they could only count the 16 ( not sure my memory is not so good anymore) best scores for the season and the other points were discarded. How did you do it?

I suspected Fangio would come out tops...@Mike Hoxbig Cars are more reliable now than ever, more races than in the past, drivers have longer careers now etc etc.
So, this is what I done:
- Took drivers representing the best of their eras, most of whom are in the GOAT debate. They are; Fangio, Clark, Stewart, Lauda, Prost, Mansell, Senna, Schumacher, Alonso, Raikkonen, Hamilton, Vettel and Verstappen.
- I used the current points system; 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1
- I took their total points and divided it by their race starts.
- Fangio - 808 points @ 15.84 pts/start (I believe using any points system puts Fangio as #1)
- Hamilton - 5167.5 points @ 14.31 pts/start
- Verstappen - 2965.5 points @ 13.86 pts/start
- Schumacher - 3890 points @ 12.71 pts/start (Loses '94 but wins in '97 under the current points and system)
- Prost - 2470 points @ 12.41 pts/start (Prost is a 7-time WDC using current points and scoring system)
- Clark - 836 points @ 11.61 pts/start
- Senna - 1859.5 points @ 11.55 pts/start
- Stewart - 1109 points @ 11.20 pts/start
- Vettel - 3282 points @ 10.98 pts/start
- Mansell - 1500 points @ 8.02 pts/start
- Raikkonen - 2791 points @ 8.00 pts/start
- Lauda - 1337 points @ 7.82 pts/start (Loses his '84 WDC to Prost, but beats Hunt in '76 under the current points and system)
- Alonso - 3168 points @ 7.80 pts/start
I suspected Fangio would come out tops...

This site is fun.
You can go even deeper and rank drivers by average points/start using every points system F1 has used. Going through each, here is the table.

Somebody did do something similar and the numbers showed that Prost would've won 8 WDC's under the new points system (all other things aside obviously).Someone with loads of time on their hands needs to work out how many points the likes of Senna, Prost and Schumacher would have scored under the current system.
Ali, Clark, Bokke, done.Who's the best is the hardest question to answer in any sport, especially over time.
Boxing? Sugar Ray Robinson / Mike Tyson / Muhammad Ali
F1? Senna / Prost / Schumacher / Hamilton / Fangio
Rugby? All Blacks / Springboks (don't ask me to mention players, could be here all day lol).
etc.
Pick your fave and get on with life lol. I guess it's fun discussing. Would make a nice trump card set. Not that trump.
I'd have a hard time picking between Prost and Fangio myself Senna sadly wasn't around long enough for me.
