Can't see it becoming a permanent feature on the calendar without government committing or someone putting up the cash in full. Failing that perhaps we'd see some testing...South Africa GP bid 'without substance' as F1 meeting held:
— A delegation from the South African Grand Prix bid met with Formula One Management (FOM) to discuss the potential return of F1 to Africa. Despite interest, the leading bid is not seen as a serious proposition by FOM.
— The Bid Steering Committee (BSC) in South Africa was dissolved after selecting a potential promoter for the Grand Prix. The Kyalami circuit project, led by Tom Pearson-Adams, is the current frontrunner but lacks full FOM confidence.
— An estimated R2bn (96 million euro) is needed to host the event. Minister Gayton McKenzie is advocating for the race, citing potential sponsors like MTN, MultiChoice, and billionaire Johann Rupert, though Heineken's further involvement is unlikely.
— The absence of a governmental guarantee is a significant hurdle, as FOM prefers such assurances for event bids. This lack of backing contributes to FOM's view of the Kyalami bid as lacking substance, a stance unchanged after a recent meeting.
— F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali did not attend the meeting, and while funding is reportedly substantial, the costs of realizing the project remain a concern. The bid's future hinges on addressing these financial and logistical challenges.
