Why another delay?
Vowles joined Williams three years ago charged with returning the team to the front of Formula 1, and made progress with a fifth-place finish in the constructors' championship last year.
This is the third time in seven years, however, in which delays in the car-build process have affected Williams' early-season plans.
Vowles said: "I've seen elements in '23. I've seen what's happened this year, and they're not the same. The particular one this year is the complexity of the car."
Of the car itself, he added: "The front (suspension) wishbone is quite an impressive design and where it is and how it's effectively constructed is pushing the boundaries of what we've done before as a business.
"But we haven't moved all parts of the business on at the same level and fleshed it out to that level to understand where we're going to break it. That's what I'm seeing now at this stage.
"You only know your boundaries by absolutely pushing every boundary possible. I absolutely believe in what I would call intelligent failure. And you get there by effectively pushing the boundaries of what you're doing. And what we did was exactly that this year.
"You forge there a heck of a lot quicker with the pain that's surrounding us at the moment than if you just skirt around the issue and maybe made the last few days of Barcelona."
They still haven't figured out where to put their team logo (or the FIA logo) on the car yet...![]()
Williams boss James Vowles 'not concerned at all' at missing Barcelona test
Williams team principal James Vowles says he is "not concerned at all" about missing the first pre-season test last week.www.bbc.com
Summary of why Williams missed Barcelona and why Vowles is okay with it, plus other thoughts.
- Pushed an extreme car design, specifically in the area of the front suspension, and it appears that they couldn't refine/produce it on time or otherwise do not fully understand it. (''But we haven't moved all parts of the business on at the same level and fleshed it out to that level to understand where we're going to break it. That's what I'm seeing now at this stage.'')
- Mercedes got more than enough laps under their belt to get a good understanding of the new PU, and this information will be filtered through to Williams.
- The virtual testing allowed them to replicate the new PUs with some accuracy, so the drivers have a good understanding of it.
- He believes there are parts of the car that are ''championship-winning'', but overall the car isn't in a place to win races.
- He, like many others, is impressed by what Adrian Newey has done with the AMR26, and specifically the front wishbones. As mentioned, this is an area where he believes Williams have gone with something quite different as well.
I actually rather like it, one of my favourite, reckon will look good on track... I guess have to wait and see

Williams is a complete joke.. that render would have taken all of 30 seconds in some AI image software.
Then they forgot to add in front suspension, I mean wtf... they started work on their 2026 first, and they finished last![]()

Deliberate.
Same reason why the Aston Martin ran in camo black.
The front suspension appears to be an area where teams are looking to do some crafty work and in the case of Williams and Aston Martin, are clearly trying to hide details. James Vowles in a recent interview spoke specifically about the front wishbones on the Williams and like many others have, he also made comments about the front wishbones on the Aston Martin.
No the images they released were all AI, and the AI completely missed the suspension layout... you can't just have a random rod connecting a wheel.
Williams is hopeless, they've missed pre season testing multiple times over the years, they're always running around like chickens without a head. Then they failed crash tests, weight issues etc.
The team is not happy... they really need to streamline things and get their ducks in a row.
