F1 2026

No idea how this was modded so fast, but here is an impression of the proposed Rwandan circuit in Assetto Corsa. It doesn't look too bad.

Doesn't look too bad but I wish they wouldn't try capture parts of existing tracks like interlagos/suzuka as inspiration. I'm sure it'll be fine regardless but would be nice to see something truly unique without the gimmicks (hello Saudi Arabia).

How bad are we that Rwanda can secure a Grand Prix before us?
Very bad, corruption stigma maybe ?

Willingness to spend.

Rwanda is willing to invest in a circuit and pay the hosting fee. Whether it materialises (see Vietnam for a stillborn F1 project in recent times) is another matter, but they have committed to it.

We appeared to have two competing bids (upgrading Kyalami and the proposed Cape Town circuit) that were reliant on government financial support that was likely not going to be forthcoming.

4 years is a long time in Africa. Have doubts we ever will see that race.
As for proposed circuit. Looks a bit narrow with fast corners. Except for straight, not much chance of overtaking.

This one sums it up.

We have been talking about F1 on-and-off for years now and now have three competing bids, none of which are materialising.

Kyalami -
Needs upgrades. Toby Venter has said he can fund the upgrades but he cannot front the hosting fee. This will likely require government support. He won't commit to the upgrades if he government doesn't commit.

Green Point street circuit -
Lots of talk around this for a few years now. A city-funded project, so public money. This is likely to receive extensive pushback and can be politically weaponised.

Blue Mountain Racing proposal -
The latest bid to bring F1 back to SA. Privately funded new circuit in Cape Town. The consortium behind it said they will cover both construction and the hosting fee. However, they still require government support and government investment into surrounding public transport and infrastructure (access roads). One positive here is the head of the consortium sees the Rwandan bid as a road opening up for us to host a race, so maybe this one actually materialises. The project is ambitious and looks beyond F1.

So, no concrete bid and no government committment.
