Sainz signs with Renault, triggers engine deals

Carlos Sainz is off to Renault next season, or even as early as this year’s Malaysian GP, as part of a deal that will see Renault end their engine contract with Toro Rosso and sign McLaren.

McLaren’s engine contract for next season is proving to be the hot topic in this year’s silly season with the Woking team keen on ending their association with Honda and instead taking on Renault power.

However, in order for that to happen, Renault need to lose one of their customers, Toro Rosso, and have reportedly agreed to do so but only if Sainz is part of the deal.

According to Motorsport.com, “high level sources have confirmed that Sainz’s deal has been agreed as part of a sweetener for Renault to end its Toro Rosso contract early.”

While the Spaniard will be joining the team ahead of next year’s championship, the publication claims that it could even happen “as early as this year’s Malaysian Grand Prix” if Renault elect not to continue with the beleaguered Jolyon Palmer.

Should Sainz move to Renault this season, that would pave the way for Pierre Gasly to make his Formula 1 debut, although that doesn’t guarantee the Frenchman a race-seat for 2018.

What it does do is open a door for McLaren to sign with Renault, Fernando Alonso to re-sign with McLaren, and Toro Rosso to take Honda engines.

Interesting. So where does that leave Robert Kubica? The only option I can see is Williams in place of either Massa (who will hopefully hang up his steering wheel for good this time) or Lance Stroll who, if rumours are to be believed, could be on his way to Force India with daddy's billions.

i know a bit premature but i'm just getting happy in any way

I expect we will hear something official this weekend.
Personally I think McLaren are making a mistake, they are out of the frying pan and into the fire by jumping to Renault and it could backfire.
If honda come right then McLaren have had all the pain and redbull get all the reward and Mclaren is still stuck with an under spec PU till 2021.

Honda is a long way off getting it right.

I am not a gamer, so this post is unusual for me but....

I saw a Youtube video of someone playing Motorsport Manager for Windows and it looked good.
I recall someone mentioning it on here too so I bit the bullet and got a copy to try.

Well 4 (or is it 5) hours later I have now run 3 races in the GP3 equivalent series gained several sponsors, managed to meet my sponsor bonus goals and have had great fun in the process.

I now have a greater appreciation for all teems and what they are doing, urging my drivers on for a 13th place finish for a $500,000 bonus to pay for a new gearbox had me on the edge of my seat.

Watching those races are as exciting as any real life F1 weekend.

I am hooked, best cash ever spent on a Windows Application, I won't call it a game, it is more a calling :)

these key words have been the cause of my demise for 3 years.

enough !

it really really cannot get any lower for McLaren, there is simply nothing left to lose

Why are Red Bull not happy with Renault?

Because it’s a schitty underpowered engine...
Guess it can do more than an installation lap however, so that is a bonus for all McLaren fans, that will see the cars driving again, even though they'll be slow.

So McLaren is getting a schitty engine

Yep, the Mercs and Ferrari’s will still breeze down the straights passed them on the high speed tracks, just like what happens to the Red Bulls, and I doubt the McLaren will suddenly get the twisty bits performance that the RB has to at least make them a little more competitive in the slower areas..
