Wehrlein's improved to a 1m27.778s now – 7.7s off the ultimate pace and 2.9s behind next-placed Palmer, who has yet to be seen on track after those "teething problems".

Daniel Ricciardo has again gone a little quicker; a 1:20.077 on the soft tyre. Felipe Massa also turns up a gear; 1:20.308 on the soft compound.

Lewis Hamilton has also made progress, his fastest lap now stands at 1:20.456, also on the soft tyres.

A 1:21.9 for Lewis. Then 1:22.08, 1:22.6, 1:27.104, 1:23.006.

Sharp degradation on the Merc?

Now a 1:22.741

This latest stint is already running to 11 laps for Lewis Hamilton, with Mercedes fast approaching 50 laps for the morning.

But they won't be the first through the half-century today as Ferrari have completed 52 laps with their SF70-H.

Hamilton pits after what was, judging by the times (below), quite a messy stint. Ricciardo has nipped back on track after more tweaks to the RB13 and immediately records a lap of 1:20.1.

We don't know the engine settings, we don't know the fuel loads, but it has to be said that the Red Bull has not only been quick today but also consistently quick

That 16-lap stint from Hamilton peaked with a 1m20.456s on his first flying lap (followed by a time 30s slower) and then gradually deteriorated into the high-1m22/low-1m23s.

We haven't mentioned McLaren for a while and there's a good (but a tad concerning) reason for that: the MCL32 hasn't been on track for the last 90 minutes or so.

Only Massa and Vettel are currently past the half-century mark for laps completed today.

After some early strong lappery, we haven't seen too much of the McLaren MCL32 in the last couple of hours.

No word from the team if there is a problem of any kind, but they'll be hoping to be back out soon and not remain stuck on 34 laps for much longer.

It's only a 1:20.1 from the Williams after it re-emerges but that latest lap from Felipe Massa included the fastest final sector time we've seen today.

And is this the reason why? The Williams had supersofts on for that latrst run.

More intriguingly, the Red Bull has also popped out into the midday sun with a set of supers fitted to the RB13...

Were we wrong to expect more from the Red Bull on supersofts? Daniel Ricciardo's first lap on the reds is a 1:20.9.

Massa posts the best final sector so far but the rest of the lap was unspectacular and he falls four-hundredths shy of his own best.

He just keeps chipping away...Wehrlein gets down to a 1m25.515s now.

Ricciardo returns after another appearance on super-softs. Nothing really to write home about – a 1m20.495s was the peak of that short run.

There's nobody on the track. That's disappointing.

A smattering of fans in the grandstand on the main straight. They came to see a show. Come on teams! Won't somebody think of the fans?

Force India and Ocon answer the call. People's champion.
Ocon's set a personal best first sector. And second. He improves to a 1m21.802s and goes fifth. That boy is a real crowd-pleaser.
But it's Esteban Ocon on the track at the moment. And only Esteban Ocon.

Ricciardo rejoins the fray.
We'll take a look at what boots his Red Bull's wearing, and whether they are made for walking or running.
Or something like that.
It looks like Ricciardo's on the ultra-softs...and he sets the fastest first sector so far.

But once again a relatively disappointing lap time from the Red Bull of 1:20.034

That's two tenths off his best on a compound two steps softer

F1 tyre supplier Pirelli restructures management structure

You won't be seeing as much of Pirelli's Paul Hembery during grand prix weekends this year, he has a new role within the Italian company:

Pirelli has restructured its Formula 1 operations and racing department, with motorsport chief Paul Hembery moving to a new role in the company's Latin American operations.

Hembery helped guide Pirelli's return to F1 in 2011, but from March 15 he will take up a new role as CEO of Pirelli LatAm.

He will, however, maintain overall supervision of motorsport activities and will attend some grands prix this year.

The change in jobs for Hembery has required a restructuring elsewhere, with racing manager Mario Isola taking on a new role as head of car racing.

Isola said he welcomed the fact that Hembery would still have input in commercial negotiations, while he is left to focus predominantly on technical matters and set up a new structure for the racing department.

"Paul has a huge experience and knowledge of motorsport, so it is very helpful to have him on board for the future, and give us guidance for the future direction of motorsport," said Isola.

"I think that Paul will maintain these [commercial] responsibilities at a high level, like the F1 Commission.

"I am happy if he continues to manage this area and I am happy to do the rest."

Isola added he did not want to change the good working relationship he had built up with teams and drivers.

"I want to carry on with the same situation and also with the drivers," he said.

"I am happy to continue and grow with the teams and grow the relationship. F1 is always developing and running quickly.

"We need to stay at the same speed. We cannot relax. You can never relax here."

NEW FASTEST LAP
We have a new fastest lap, but not from Ricciardo!
Massa sets a 1:19.726.

The fastest times of winter testing so far

1) Valtteri Bottas, Day Three, Ultrasofts, 1:19.705

2) Felipe Massa, Day Five, Supersofts, 1:19.726

3) Sebastian Vettel, Day Three, Softs, 1:19.952

An impressive lap from Massa, considering he was on the Super Softs.
Blink and you'll miss him. @MassaFelipe19 #Williams40 #FW40 #F1Testing pic.twitter.com/Tub9SrH6pj

Magnussen breaks the silence (it wasn't like that for long) as he emerges in the Haas.
Three personal-best sectors for Magnussen launch him to fifth with a 1m21.676s.
Vettel and Wehrlein (who is on a personal-best lap) are also on track as we head into the final 20 minutes of the morning session.

Wehrlein is off the bottom! Wild scenes in the Barcelona grandstands as the Sauber man punches in a 1m23.336s to move ahead of Palmer's Renault on the timing screens.

Vettel has also improved, to add to the delirium in the stands. The Ferrari driver has clocked a 1m21.127s. That's a very modest improvement, but an improvement nonetheless. Improvement, then, from Vettel.

We're told that Ricciardo went off at Turn Four on his ultrasoft run. Although that;s not official yet.

And now for the really bad news...

The problem with McLaren - stuck in the garage for at least two hours now - is with the Honda engine.

And it could get worse: it could be another couple of hours before the car returns to action.

A fantastic time from Felipe Massa, but given the 1.5/2s defecit Williams faced to the leading teams last year - it does make you wonder just how much Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari are holding back.

And just how much quicker could these new cars go?

As we approach the lunch hour Ricciardo breaks the 1:20 barrier, setting a lap time of 1:19.900 on the ultrasoft compound.

And The chequered flag falls.

Massa ends the morning fastest.
Will there be any late, late dramas like last week?
We're expecting it to be quite a civil conclusion.

1. Massa Williams FW40 1:19.726 63 ●
2. Ricciardo Red Bull Racing RB13 1:19.900 +0.174 47 ●
3. Hamilton Mercedes W08 1:20.456 +0.730 49 ● PIT
4. Vettel Ferrari SF70-H 1:21.127 +1.401 76 ●
5. Ocon Force India VJM10 1:21.347 +1.621 59 ● PIT
6. Magnussen Haas F1 VF-17 1:21.676 +1.950 43 ●
7. Kvyat Toro Rosso STR12 1:21.965 +2.239 45 ● PIT
8. Vandoorne McLaren MCL32 1:22.698 +2.972 34 ● PIT
9. Wehrlein Sauber C36 1:23.336 +3.610 47 ● PIT
10. Palmer Renault RS17 1:24.790 +5.064 15 ● PIT

1. Massa 289.5 0
2. Vettel 288 0
3. Ricciardo 285.7 0
4. Hamilton 282.7 0
5. Magnussen 281.9 0
6. Kvyat 279.7 0
7. Ocon 279.7 0
8. Wehrlein 279.7 0
9. Vandoorne 276.2 0
10. Palmer 272.7 0

From a distance at least, that RB13 doesn't look to be particularly different from last week - suggesting that, as expected, Red Bull were holding more than a little pace back last week now they are down in the high 1:19s.

But it's Williams who are going to end the morning at the head of the timesheet.

What a disaster - again - for McLaren. For just how much longer can this situation go on?

The news of their latest engine failure is unofficial at present but the lap charts don't lie: Stoffel Vandoorne's tally of 34 laps so far has been bettered by every other car with the exception of the Sauber.

The problem with McLaren - stuck in the garage for at least two hours now - is with the Honda engine.

And it could get worse: it could be another couple of hours before the car returns to action.

A reminder that Eric Boullier, the McLaren boss, will be speaking to the media in a couple of hours' time...

McLaren's statistics certainly don't get any better - they're now the only one of F1's 10 teams not to lap the Circuit de Catalunya in under 1:22s this winter.

Ouch.
