F1 - General discussion and 2017

What's the IRT series? Pardon my ignorance.

Apologies. Think that should be IRL (Indy Racing League). The cars are devoid of flaps, flip ups etc that adorn the F1 cars. Most of their downforce comes from the floor which results in cars being able to follow each other closely through high speed corners.

EDIT: Ok, not completely devoid of aero aids. Check out Sebastian Bourdais' 2017 Indy charger.

I don't believe Indy Cars use it any longer with the new chassis kits. The problem with ground effect is that a tiny bump could upset the skirt/seal and lead to catastrophic accidents. If said bump occurred mid corner their would be an instant loss in downforce.

The problem with going the IRL route is the fact that F1 is now owned by the Americans too.

I can see them renaming F1 as IRL-Europe or the IRL as F1-USA.

Liberty Media were making a bid for IRL, it would make sense for them to manage and market them as similar events with different markets.

As long as F1 is not converted to Oval Tracks I guess they cant break too much :wtf:

IRL is not an open formula. I think there is one chassis provider and a few engine suppliers. F1 going that route would a travesty.

A1 was a good formula. It's problems were mainly due to lack of sponsors and funding.

Would like to know from the fellow Mclaren fans, how you think things would go. Seems bad that even Alonso has no faith in the team. That Honda motor just seems to slow and leaving something short in the power range

/Starts ritual to resurrect Ayrton Ssenna

Speed and power are second to reliability...

Even Alonso has said Mclaren should have been last.. (see my previous post from SkyF1)

Will be amazed if Honda still supplies engines next season, Mclaren should just make their own power plants

Will Lewis Hamilton v Sebastian Vettel dominate F1 2017?

The good, of course, is that for the first time since perhaps 2008, there appear to be two teams capable of fighting it out all season for the world title.

And after a decade of waiting for Lewis Hamilton v Sebastian Vettel, two of the sport's brightest stars finally appear ready to occupy the same orbit. Fernando Alonso should quibble with Hamilton billing the fight as 'the best against the best' but a 'champion of champions' contest between Hamilton and Vettel is a mouthwatering prospect.

They may have the Engineering Resources but they don't have the R&D Capital.
Trying to create one of the current generation Power Units would likely bankrupt the group, not just the team.
They are losing money hand over fist as they wait for Honda to fix the problems but it is still cheaper than starting from scratch.

Sticking with Honda they have a slim shot at the top.
Throwing in the towel and becoming a customer team dooms them to a midfield existence.

I hope they don't end up like Williams, fighting to be the best of the midfield.

My hope, but fighting for midfield is better than fighting with Marussia, Haas,SAUBER, etc. Trying to be the second or third from the bottom. Mclaren has some serious R&D work to do.
Just promising success from launch than having dismal testing and first race is not very convincing to the fans

Fortunately they aren't fighting with Marussia now ;)

For all the talk, McLaren can't just ditch Honda due to the estimated $100 million sponsorship deal between the two. Changing engines means they will need to secure some major sponsorship deals and that isn't going to happen while they are running around at the back of the grid. It will be even harder to lure sponsors when Alonso leaves, who is without doubt still one of the best drivers on the grid.

They're in a bad position.

Definitely not the route you want to take. Those cars generate an obscene amount of downforce and like NASCAR are exploring scaling it back. I don't know if the status quo has changed with the new F1 cars, but in 2016 the IndyCars were generating more downforce than F1 cars. They battled to pass one another on ovals and there was a decrease in multi-lane running, a trademark of oval racing where two equally fast racing lines can develop.
