Lionhead Studio’s Fable 2 has shot to number one in the UK all-format charts in the face of strong competition from Far Cry 2.
Ubisoft Montreal’s highly-ambitious open-ended FPS sold enough units to leapfrog last week’s chart-topping Pro Evolution Soccer 2009, yet it was the UK-developed Fable 2 that had taken the most sales overall, becoming the first Microsoft title to do so since Halo 3.
The strong sales of Fable 2 have made it the fifth-fastest-selling game ever in the UK, an honour only topped by GTA IV, Halo 3, FIFA 09 and Call of Duty 4.
Pro Evo 09 took a higher-than-expected sales drop of 58%, falling in fourth behind FIFA 09, a game it had surpassed in the charts the previous week. FIFA 09 sales declined to 24%, though its buoyancy in the UK charts will no doubt please its publishers. EA may not be so delighted to see its lauded survival-horror title Dead Space fail to make a significant impact in the charts, however, as it landed at sixth place during a Halloween season that looked likely to drive sales further up.
Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii remain glued together, though both titles fell three places to reach eighth and ninth place respectively. Rockstar’s Midnight Club: Los Angeles, despite strong TV advertising, only managed to enter at tenth.
