Bloemfontein - Chaos broke out at the University of the Free State's Bloemfontein campus on Wednesday, after about 800 people - believed to be mostly ANCYL members - stormed the main building.
The group, who had been bussed in to the campus, protested against the fact that no political activities by outside groups will be allowed on the campus during the university's SRC elections.

They also demanded that the rector, Professor Jonathan Jansen, be fired.

Free State chair of Sasco (SA Student Congress) Manyene Lesapo said: "He [Jansen] has burned political structures on campus."

Calling him a "coconut", they bemoaned the fact that they had co-operated with him in the past.

Police intervened when white students and protesters, armed with sticks and stones and singing Kill the boer, faced off over pamphlets that the group had scattered all over the campus.

The white students were stopped from cleaning up the pamphlets strewn in front of the main building.

Free State ANC Youth League chair, Kgotso Morapela, leading the protest, at one stage had to calm a small group of protesters after being interrupted with "Ag shurrup" (Oh shut up), shouted by a student looking on.

Moments before the interruption, Morapela acknowledged the protest was illegal.

Thuggish behaviour

Jansen said the university was worried about "thuggish behaviour" by outside groups invading the campus.

"An urgent interdict has been obtained and any further invasions by outside groups will lead to arrest."

Dean of students Rudi Buys said the election for a student representative council continues.

Buys said lectures were not interrupted by the fracas.

"Everything continues as normal."

The university said police had arrested about 150 people.

Approached for comment, two students said they were not sure what was going on.

"Those people, we do not know them," they said, adding "They do not belong here."

They felt the new SRC election process had been "fine" and "fair".

Another student felt Jansen had done his best to get rid of racism and sort out "political activism".

He said before Jansen arrived there was constant trouble at Kovsies.

“Now these things happen. This is tragic,” he said, adding that he did not know any of the protesters.
Lovely. ?

remind me why they need an interdict to arrest someone who has vandalised private property?

We dimund better edumakashion so we are going to ben down the library.

Gee if only us normal people could commit terrorist acts and not be charged with anything.

I don't know why Blade Nzimande moaned that not enough of the African world view and indigenous knowledge systems were introduced into the University curricula.
Looks like the Free state university already got it part of their curricula...

Flawless Yoof Leek logic as usual. We had the same sort of thing at TUKS when I was studying. Fortunately two cops and a campus security guard physically stopped me from smacking the **** out of one of those barbarians after it threw a trash bin in a girl's face so hard she was bleeding.

Let me get this. So only the political parties on campus were allowed and the ANCYL are pissed cause the wanted to gate crash the party.

This is crazy. What makes the ANCYL so special that they think they can protest at places that do not concern them? The Uni wants an election without political intervention, so let them be!

They clearly want to influence or be apart of the winning SRC. It's a SRC election for the university by the university, and the ANCYL probably want to be involved so they can spread their propaganda.

Great, even when the person a "non-white" it is blamed on the white imperialistic tendencies.... :wtf:

Mark my words, Julius will no doubt have something to say within the next few days:
"This is racist! How can they stop us from practising our democratic right to gate-crash the party?! Anti-revolutionary colonialists!"

Was on campus yesterday, didn't really bother me though, there were masses of police officers around.

Glad they locked up some of the retards though.

The ANCYL are special! Special needs special!

This has absolutely nothing to do with education and everything to do with politics. The ANCYL need turmoil in the university - they thrive on chaos. Jansen's splendid work needs to be undone now for them to be at all important again...

Jansen isn't white?
He is...
Here's a picture to prove it.
