Facebook reaches tipping point

Facebook Inc.’s employees have been staging walkouts (virtually, of course — it’s Silicon Valley and a pandemic is afoot).

They’ve also posted to an internal chat board, complaining that Zuckerberg, the social media powerhouse’s founder, is allowing it to be used to foment violence, hatred and disinformation by letting President Donald Trump’s incendiary Facebook posts remain in place. [Bloomberg]
 
And Trump can say what he wants, if you look at the media the USA is the real shithole of this world.
 
But ultimately who has said that social media companies must be the judge of what to remove or sensor? Surely they should be an open platform where the same algorithm that shows the posts of the left apply to the right side in the US current case? Would that not just mean that what you see as an individual on the platform will most likely be the type of friends and pages you follow and their respective views and what they share?

Exactly what they want to be... the only voice allowed on Facebook and nobody is allowed to shout counter-arguments. They would basically then become the villain they complained about because they mentioned that Facebook was used by Trump and the Russians to sway the 2016 elections.

One of those who joined the meeting, Color of Change President Rashad Robinson, was troubled by Zuckerberg’s decision to keep the Trump posts.

“The problem with my ongoing conversations with Mark is that I feel like I spent a lot of time, and my colleagues spent a lot of time, explaining to him why these things are a problem, and I think he just very much lacks the ability to understand it,” Robinson told a Bloomberg News reporter.

Robinson and two other civil rights leaders who participated in the Zuckerberg call also released a statement elaborating on that thought: “He did not demonstrate understanding of historic or modern-day voter suppression. … Mark is setting a very dangerous precedent for other voices who would say similar harmful things on Facebook.”

So the thing with cambridge analytica is actually rather scary. Using the facebook data, they managed to build over 5000 data points on US citizens and then target people who were on the fence or clinton voters by sending them targeted material to manipulate their views on clinton and swing the votes. The technology, targeting ability and its ability to manipulate people was classed as a "weapons grade tool" by the UK.

Interestingly enough, the ANC also used cambridge analytica for their data points on south african's and the weapons grade targeting for their election campaigns. In fact they have played a huge role in most african country elections.

Exactly! you hit the nail on the head. It essentially comes down to algorithm manipulation for the benefit of a specific side be it a company or a political idea etc also something that Facebook and the likes should stay far away from if it wants to be seen as neutral.
