I exist only in my own mind ...
New: The old "Who can send you Facebook messages" setting is being retired. Now anyone can message you, but you choose how messages are filtered.

Right now, you mostly see stuff from friends in your Inbox. To review your filtering options, click Other > Edit Preferences.

So anyone can see my details, but Facebook offers me an ostrich technique to fix it? Time to move to a more secure and professionally designed option.

How does this mean they can see all your details?
They can only do this if they know who you are beforehand.
Otherwise everything remains hidden and private if you have set it that way.

This says they can find me, even if I haven't given them rights so to do. Finding things is the first step in breaching security.

Facebook is fixing something that's already working well. I heard Facebook is thinking of charging for Facebook inbox messaging.

I have clients who have gotten into a lot of trouble by posting thoughtless comments on Facebook. Not only did they get charged with a criminal offence necessitating a few sessions in court (which cost them at least R40 000 in attorneys fees) they sometimes got a criminal record and some clients got sued by the injured party. Dashing off a rude message while not thinking straight at a party can lead to dire consequences.

Especially if you are not sure who can view it ...

Cool story bro.

Now to get back on topic. My Facebook is locked down so much that they'd find it hard to message me, since they can't find me :)

But Facebook says, via a message to me :

What does anyone mean?

PS Maybe not clear in OP, but the item quoted is a message from Facebook.

Yes, but that's not logical.

I have a very unique name and surname. The only result for my name is my previous company and my twitter account on Google, other wise I don't exist.

My FB settings are set to friends only and my profile is close friends only. So it's possible for a friend of a friend to message me, but definitely not "anyone", since they can't find me on FB.

Hope it makes it clearer.

Facebook does have its uses, but anyone worried about security should steer clear of social networking.

Unless anyone can send you a message. You are hoping that people can't find you. What this says is that if they do find you they have permission to send you messages. What FB should implement is that if you have not explicitly given someone rights to send you a message, even if the find you, they cannot as they do not have permission to do so.

We tell everyone not to use Facebook, even if they just intend to post pictures of their kids

Agreed. But many web sites are requesting Facebook credentials as a login and I'm pretty sure that the greater majority of people do not understand how this compromises their privacy. For instance have a look at a site such as iol.co.za and go to comments. By clicking on the posters ID you can view their Facebook page, which means that they did not even carry out the minimum of privacy settings.

Yes I know it's stupid to post comments on IOL, but that's what social networking is encouraging. One needs to look at privacy from the lowest level of sophistication, not from a nerd's point of view.

They have always been able to find your profile name through Google (and you can even turn this setting on or off). But once they arrive at your Timeline page, your privacy settings kick in and control how much they can see. If your timeline is locked down to friends only, then all they can see is your name. They can then decide if they want to send you a message or not (but they will have to pay facebook for that privilege). There won't be much spam since spam relies on the ability to send vast amounts of e-mail for free. This is NOT free.

What kind of charges are applicable?
