A former employer contacted me this morning. Her father is on Facebook and is constantly being convinced to buy the likes of Emma Watson and Elon Musk and others Apple vouchers.

We tried talking to him and he refuses our help and still continue to support these scammers.

She asked me if there is any way we can uninstall his Facebook or cancel it completely without his prior input. He apparently has spent almost R40 000 on Apple and other vouchers for these scammers.

He is over 80 and when they tried to take his phone away to remove and block these actors he got violent with them. They can't get into his accounts or into his phone without him voluntarily handing it over.

I did go onto his profile, which of course is completely public and with majority nigerian money scams on his wall. Some of his FB contacts, the real family and friends, have brought it to his attention but no dice.

For the last 2 hours I have been sitting on my Facebook account reporting these fake accounts from his friends list but other than that there is nothing more I can do for them.

Anybody know how to get the peeps from FB tolook and intervene?

You can't help anyone who doesn't want to be helped.

Perhaps ask his family to submit a request to Facebook to block the fathers account - explaining why?
Not sure FB will do so, but worth a try.

He is one good looking actor away from reading out his debit card numbers and losing even more money than vouchers.
And reporting fake accounts doesn't work. A distant aunt almost got caught by a "UN ambassador" whose fake profile using the picture of a South Korean general still exists today despite my reports.

This is why getting power of attorney over your parents accounts before they suffer age-related dementia is so important.

The banks wont even listen to you if you call to cancel the card, unless you are dishonest and call the bank saying "Oh Bank X, I just found this card in the street. Please cancel it so the person isn't defrauded. Thanks" and then act all surprised when its blocked and lay the blame on the fake actors getting him into trouble with the bank or something.

Unless you can prove that he is not mentally sound and get a court order to declare him incapable of managing his own affairs, there's not much you can do. Google "curator bonis".

FaceBook has proven useless in situations like this, my mother's FaceBook profile got 'hacked', I still don't think she has it sorted out and just started a new profile.

Can you link his FB account so that we can have a look? My friend Harry Potter might be able to perform some magic on his account.

I only trust Harry Pothead tbh

Only way is to get hold of his phone and remove FB/change the password.

If he is still of sound mind then there is not much you can do.

Pretend to be a scammer, take all his money, put it in another account for him.

Problem solved.

Scam him on Facebook. Keep the money to one side, and when he's more responsible, give it back.

The only thing that's going to prevent being scammed is to be aware of scams. After all this time a random complaint isn't going to kick FB into action.
