Facebook shared data from private groups

Facebook Inc. said it unknowingly gave outside developers access to private user information shared within some groups on its main social network, including the names and profile photos of people who were part of those groups.

The company disclosed the issue Tuesday, saying that for the past 18 months some third-party developers who used Facebook’s Groups API could see which users shared posts or left comments inside a group, even though they weren’t supposed to have that level of detail. [Bloomberg]

Why are people surprised, in this day and age of the internet, technology, CCTV cameras, Amazon & Google smart speakers, etc there are no privacy, in fact, we freely carry these potential spy devices around with us.

Wonder if I could just cut out all the middlemen (Facebook, Google, etc) and just start selling off my own data?

Yes

Just remember, data value is based on scale, it scales exponentially, not linearly, you selling only your own private data is probably near worthless.
