There is a fierce battle in the social networking space with MySpace and Facebook being the two main contenders.

According to the latest US based Nielsen Netratings statistics, MySpace is still leading the pack with 58 843 000 unique monthly visitors. It has a very comfortable lead over sites like Facebook which attracted 19 519 000 unique browsers and Classmates Online with 13 278 000 unique visitors.

What is however telling is the year-on-year growth of the respective websites. While MySpace showed a yearly growth of 19 % Facebook grew at a rate of 125%. This yearly growth may be of some concern to MySpace, but the fact that MySpace has a higher base and less space to grow is a telling factor. It will most probably only be possible to make a true comparison once Facebook has a similar user base.

According to Facebook it currently has more than 57 million active users with an average of 250 000 new registrations per day. This growth means that the website’s active user base doubles every 6 months.

Facebook received more than 65 billion page views per month and it is the premier photo sharing application on the web with more than 14 million photos uploaded daily.

MySpace is not as open about its statistics, but there is some information about the site’s stats. Alexa ranks MySpace as the sixth busiest website, compared to Facebook’s ranking of seven.

According to WiKiPedia, MySpace has officially passed the 200 Million account mark, but unfortunately these is no indication as to how many of these accounts are accessed on a monthly bases.

MySpace is clearly by far the largest social networking website in existence today, but Facebook is catching up fast. Facebook’s older membership and more user friendly interface may see it take the lead in the near future.
