I got exposed to my first FaceBook virus today. The FaceBook virus was smuggled in as a message on FaceBook that pretended to be a message about a video featuring me in it. It even comes from somebody you really know. The link is disguised just enough to at first glance not get you worried.
In this case it was http://youtubefile.110mb.com/cat/ which leads to a page that looks enough like YouTube to get you interested. Then it complains about needing the latest Flash Plug-in to work correctly. This is where I started smelling a rat and Kaspersky security also started asking questions. They will catch thousands of people if not millions this way! Let’s face it; we all want to check that video and whether it was made with you in a precarious condition.

I have heard antivirus executives talk about it when it first started happening but now I have firsthand experience of it. I would like to see how many people reading this blog have seen something similar. The forum discussion on this blog will have a poll to measure it. There was an initial scare with the “koobface” worm a while ago largely feigning Google sites. In this instance it is feigning YouTube.
Two variants of the virus have been identified: Net-Worm.Win32.Koobface.a, which attacks MySpace and Net-Worm.Win32.Koobface.b, which attacks FaceBook. There have been other viruses propagating using snares similar to “Come check out this video of you” and “The FBI vs. FaceBook” like the Storm Worm which forced the FBI to come out with a public notice on the message of the worm.

What you should do to protect yourself from attacks like these include:

Be skeptical about who it came from. Would this person send you stuff like this?
Check the domains you go to. Is http://youtubevideo.iwillfindoutwhereyouliveyousodd.central.prison.com or is it really http://www.youtube.com for instance?
DO NOT download random plug-ins. If you installed Flash or anything like that the odds are you are being scammed. If you need to make sure go to the official website of the said plug-in and download it there.
Make sure your antivirus and web security software is up to date!
