Facing Traffic

Drive as k@k as a taxi and you will be fine. You need to blend in. Did you ever see two taxies in an accident? I follow this principle when if I need to down here in the Cape.

Ai taxi drivers are a problem all over South Africa I drive far away from them and truck drivers.

Thank you buddy I drive around Rustenburg so I'm already used to it. I need to face on Joburg and Pretoria traffic. Rustenburg traffic is a breeze plus drivers here when they see you struggling the move away from you especially if you have learner sticker.

Please don't forget to use your indicators when you going to change lanes.

I moved to Johannesburg from Knysna, and honestly traffic wasn't that hard to get used to. Admittedly I ended up driving into the big city in the evening when it was raining heavily and I was exhausted after being on the road for 12 hours, but I still survived.

There was a funny time when I went to pick my wife up at the airport, took the wrong off-ramp, ended up going through a toll gate and then having to turn around and go back through the same toll gate, just so that I could get home :) Talk about school fees!

Other than that, the biggest benefit is knowing the route you're taking and planning which lanes to take well in advance. If you're going with a GPS, it makes it easy: just make sure you pick the right lane ahead of time, and ALWAYS check your blind spots before changing lanes.

Not all cars in Johannesburg are doing 120km/h: the general rule is to always drive 20km/h over the speed limit (of course you have to know where the speed cameras are to pull that off confidently), so unless you're happy with speeding fines just let the idiots go and try not get intimidated.

Take off the learner sticker, you are no longer a learner. Especially if you've had it for over a year already.

I went to Pretoria today driving alone my friend she was in her car. Didn't do mistakes just that my little Honda Brio 1.2 is slow so I was moving into the yellow line a lot. So proud of myself baby steps thanks to everyone for the advice.

What colour is your Brio man? Standard silver or perhaps a stand out Rallye Red...

Standard Silver with big red L at the back

Guy, that's not allowed. You are not a learner.

The same for driving in the yellow, that's not legal unless somebody is passing you.

Between this and the polony saga, I'm seriously thinking you're just a troll. Can you really be this naive about how to behave in life?

Who said so the is no law about how long one should put LEARNER sign.

If you took time to read before replying I never said I was driving in the yellow line, I said I was moving into the yellow line a lot. Because my car is slow meaning moving into the yellow line to let other cars pass. Are you satisfied Mr know it all.

There is nothing in the legislation concerning L-Plates. They are not a requirement and are purely optional.

And yes I do have a driving license...

Why were you moving into the yellow line? Your 1.2 Brio should be perfectly sufficient for normal roads, you are not allowed to move over to the emergency lane on the highway/freeway only on normal single roads, keep left pass right, if you're chucking along at 40km/h in a Honda Brio you need to get somethings checked out.
Also there isn't anything legally about the L, but the assumption is that the person driving is a learner and not an experienced driver, if you've had your license for over a month you should take the thing off.

Keep the big red L. Having your licence doesn't make you an experienced driver. Atleast I'll see the L and know the reason why you stall at the stop street infront of me. Or when i'm idling at 30 behind a Brio. :crylaugh:

65kW on a car weighing less than 1,5 tons, I also don't understand where the slow issue is coming from, He should be hogging the fast lane with the Gti's. :D
