JOHANNESBURG - There's been an explosion at a factory in Spartan, Kempton Park on the East Rand.

Witnesses claim people were on burning in the factory.

A man, who works in the building opposite the factory, described what he saw.

“We saw an explosion from our office and when we went down to the scene, it was just bad. There was lots of smoke and the building had collapsed. People were burning.”

Details are sketchy, but paramedics are on the scene to treat those injured in the blast.

Terrible. Sincerely hope nobody was severely injured or died...

I was also wondering if it was the same one as Feb. If so, mofo in charge needs a little lesson in safety, which he can pass down to his workers (however many are left).

Labour Department to Probe East Rand Blast

An explosion at a factory in Kempton Park on Wednesday morning would be investigated, said the Gauteng labour department.

A formal inquiry set up under the Occupational Health and Safety Act would seek to establish the cause of the blast, said spokesman Mishack Magakwe.

Paramedics said six people were critically injured in the blast at Oricol Environmental Services.

The company specialises in collecting hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals from industrial companies, and recycling waste material.

If the employer was found to be negligent and to have flouted any aspect of the law, a recommendation to prosecute would be made to the director of public prosecutions, said Magakwe.

"We cannot allow employers to continue to disregard worker safety," he said.

"The Occupational Health and Safety Act requires the employer to bring about and maintain, as far as reasonably practicable, a work environment that is safe and without risk to the health of the workers."

I love how in one breath they state they'll investigate and then in another come to a conclusion already.

There are any number of reasons for an explosion at a factory, and not all of them are negligence on the part of the company...
