Hey Guys

I don't give a darn about the problems Telkom are facing at the moment. The fact remains that I am not getting as much pleasure with ADSL as with my NORMAL 56k dial up. Below is a ping and tracert to Yahoo.com

Pinging www.yahoo.akadns.net [216.109.118.72] with 32 bytes of data:

Trace complete.

A TIMEOUT ON BROADBAND. Is this some kind of JOKE ?

It's impossible to download or even browse properly with these disgusting stats. Im so happy that the DSL is at work not at home.

Telkom does not guarantee international BANDWIDTH yes I accept that but this is NOT a bandwidth issue, even if I get a 1k/s transfer rate at least the file that I am attempting to download will complete.

The facts speak for themselves. I have even had the unfortunate pleasure while when on UUNET 128k dial-up to be thrust into the Telkom ATM cloud with the same ADSL pings. When next the above issue occurs I will make a trace of it and submit it to my ISP as a router problem. This problem is a lot larger then ADSL as it effects dial-up too. The only thing that I can think of doing is to bombard my ISP with this data and more like it, in an attempt for them to get on Telkom's backside and issue an offcial statement regarding ADSL in this country.

Cheers All

Rat

you must remember that not all routers/servers will respond to a ping request. And in some cases will only respond to one in every few ping requests. This could be what you experienced.

However, having said that, this network shaping is just wrong. I didn't get ADSL to be told what I'm allowed to do with it. FFS telskum, wake up! NOT everyone just browses the internet.

Using my international pop3 server is a problem.
Yes I share the international bandwidth with several people but their must be a time that we all can get 3 K of transfer down. I must add my first month was great but the honey moon is over. Telkom has me as a client and don’t care any more.

The facts speak for themselves.

It’s a bad service.

nscheepe, I have a similair problem, since Telkom's wonderfull ISP has never provided me with any POP or SMTP information whatsoever (besides a username and password) and since their helpdesk is even more useless (a streekid sniffing glue is more informational) I'm forced to use my international pop3 server and my own smtpd, which TIMES OUT due to cap'ing, nevermind that international mails by my smtpd is as good as undeliverable (I guessed mail/smtp.saix.net as a relay and that is fun if you love your mails to go to the big bit bucket in the sky).

Either way I am forced to use a VPN to solve my problem, I do not even want to start to wonder how any small home office can use DSL.

Telkom POP and SMTP info:

pop3.telkomsa.net
smtp.dsl.telkomsa.net

You should have 2 or 4 mail accounts, but you have to ask to get them setup.

Hey Rattex, did not see you at last collective lan, where were you mate ?

I have had the exact same problem as you, and have been experiencing it for the last 20 days. Has yours been solved ? Anybody else knows how to solve this ?

If people installing asdl are doing it for cost reasons, for a little extra you can install one way satellite down, keep your existing asdl. You will receive no cap and good speed.

So it is possible to have satellite with ADSL? I've just cancelled my WOL satellite for ADSL. I wondered if it was possible to have both.
