Earlier today, our tips inbox and the official Assassin's Creed 2 forum were set ablaze by incensed owners of the PC version of the aforementioned Italian revenge epic. According to numerous reports from prospective players of the game, Ubisoft's DRM authentification servers have crashed, forcing some players to suffer lengthy login periods when booting up Assassin's Creed 2, and locking some folks out of the game entirely.

A Ubisoft representative responded to a particularly rage-filled forum thread, stating "clearly the extended downtime and lengthy login issues are unacceptable, particularly as I've been told these servers are constantly monitored." The representative added "I'll do what I can to get more information on what the issue is here first thing tomorrow and push for a resolution and assurance this won't happen in the future." We've got a really great suggestion for how to make such an assurance: Find a less abominable DRM policy.

I'm not even surprised.

I loved AC1 but will not play AC2 purely because of DRM.

Developers running DRM are making massive losses but they still continue with this ****

"Engineering hours building unbreakable DRM: $1.6M
Marketing devoted to managing customer hostility to new DRM: $800K
Lost sales due to customers boycotting your product: $2M
Having some wiseass kid from Sweden break your DRM on the first day: Priceless"

Brilliant!

Nice quote mezu, I like it. I do love that it was cracked on the first day. Its just pure sweet irony.

I love Ubisoft games but this is not cool, I have enough problems with Steam and The Orange Box as it is.

haha... Poetic Justice. I'll bet the guys who are using the pirated version did not experience any problems... only the paying customers :D

assassins creed 2 has not been cracked yet, the only workaround available at this time causes a white screen of death, as they call it. Silent Hunter 5 isnt fully cracked as of yet aswell.

Nice. Add to this the need to have a useful broadband connection, and the fail just continues.

Ja, I see so... but you know it is just a matter of time! :D

My cousin wanted to buy the PC version yesterday and I convinced him not too, this DRM is really working for Ubifail

Its hardly uncommon for games to have server issues within the first few days. Bioware had the same issues with their dlc servers for dragon age when it launched. Personally I have had no issue with drm for ac2. If you have a decent connection for most part it will be fine.

My problem with it is simple -- why should legitimate buyers (those who ultimately support the developers) have to tiptoe around DRM? There is no excuse to victimise your supporters.

Also, with BioWare I see DLC as a reward and not a necessity to play the game.

DLC = Downloadable Content?

If so, then I agree with Lycanthrope - a "bonus" for being legit is miles removed from a punishment for said.

Yup. That's my line of thought exactly.

Reward those who buy your games, don't victimise them, because that's more an incentive to pirate your games.

What Bioware has done is a brilliant first step...I just shudder everytime I see the EA logo when loading up ME2
