Thanks Dean. You have made some very valid points.

Ram upgrades, as you correctly point out, are easy and cheap these days - so discarding that as a factor - leaves me with HDD & GPU in favour of Vostro. Regarding the former, I was shocked to find that her current machine only had a 280GB HDD in it (did I mention it was old?!), and she had only used about 70% of it, after many years... I.e., the 500GB will probably be fine. Regarding GPU - she won't notice. We don't do gaming or heavy editing etc. at all.

Re Latitude - screen and OS - that's not what I would focus on, but [having though about it], but is definitely something my wife would absolutely notice... E.g. "the photos look amazing // I can still use Windows...." :)

And I am someone who can appreciate build quality. I appreciate the build-quality of my MBP, afterall! :P

So it's looking pretty good for the Latitude... Thanks again!

Ah - never even noticed that! Excuse my ignorance - but never having used one myself - what are the benefits? Does it simply allow for a external monitor [and other externals] to be attached, whilst simultaneously charging the device? [Sincere question!]
 
I'd say Latitude as well. The main reason for her not going Mac is the adjustment to a new OS, and if she's not happy doing that then it's pointless going Windows 8. All the other differences between the two is much of a muchness, and not really relevant to her needs.

Cleans up the cabling mess since you don't have to plug everything into the laptop. Everything is connected to the dock so you simply place the laptop on the dock and you're ready to work.

Just a FYI, there has not been a Unix release in a long time. There is Solaris (which was based on Unix V) and there are Unix like systems such as BSD and Linux.

I use windows way more than I use a mac. I would say I'm more of a windows user, if time spent is a criteria.

On the unix side use IBM AIX.

The Windows start button will return to Windows 8, if it hasn't already. That should make it easier for people to transition to Windows 8. But I agree. I have Windows 7 at home and don't really feel the need to go to Windows 8. Quite happy with Win7. I am looking at getting a new desktop and will most likely just accept Windows 8 that comes with it. :)

Lately, the only time I have received a new version of Windows is when I get a new desktop.

The windows start button return is such an insult to user intelligence. all it does is launch the metro interface.
