I am trying to setup my college webmail account and I just cant seem to get it right. My email address is something like [email protected] and the system has no problem with the url which is http:webmail.ufh.ac.za but it is the part on the Email Account Name and User Name thats doing my head in. I have tried several combinations like my whole name/email address/Exchange username but I just cant seem to get it right. Please assist if you have setup an SA college email. thanks in advance

MS Exchange needs domain info as well, as it can host multiple domain etc.

For username field: <domain>\<exchange username>
i.e.: mydomainserverjhb\myusername

Password field: <password>

Am sure they supplied it.

Possible that your varsity has restricted such external connections to their mail server. I know a friend who is a Stellenbosch University and the only way to access their mail is via Outlook Web Access, pop and imap has not been configured on the servers for security reasons as well as network load.

Its most likely that you have the same problem, BB uses IMAP to check for mail and even if your server supports pop it may not support imap as its a far less used protocol mainly used by webmail solutions like gmail and hotmail as well as hosting solutions.

POP downloads the mail and unless configured otherwise removes it from the server, IMAP simply copies the mail and in outlook for example will download only mail headers until you actually select the mail, its a much slower protocol but works well for mobile devices because of possible size and memory limitations, if it only downloads the header it can detect any possible problems if the whole mail is downloaded.
BIS itself had email limitations of 3mb for mail body and 5mb for its attachment, if you receive a mail with embedded images they count toward the body so if its 5mb text and embedded image it will stop downloading after 3mb, with POP such a thing is not possible and the mail would then simply be rejected but the handset.

Check with your mail admins to see if it is even possible, and if so what ports have they assigned, you can then enter these manually when creating your email on your handset.
