Most of you have quoted a number without asking the most important question:

What work will this junior web dev do in PHP?

For Joomla/WordPress modifying/building, the range would be on the lower end. I was told by someone that web'site' related work is now a commodity and you compete with the guys in India for $5 an hour. How far this is true, I am not sure (although website design seems important enough to me from a marketing perspective).

If the work is using a framework like Zend/Laravel to build complex web applications, then maybe the quotation of R15-25K seems fair.

As far as getting developers up to speed, doesn't it require any dev (even senior) to at least take 3 months to understand what is going on in terms of big projects/etc?

As for PHP in 2014 ...

Hi guys, thanks for all the feedback. I'm basically getting swamped periodically with part time work and want to move it over to someone else. I think I will go along with someone who is willing to contract for a few projects and if they prove themselves then move them over to full time employment.

Looking for someone that I can teach and groom from time to time with PHP and more than likely Joomla skills. I'm at that awkward stage of just getting in less than required to pay a proper full time job but if they prove they are worth their weight then I can comfortably move them over to full time employment or subsidise in the beginning from my own money.

They don't necessarily need to have a qualification but I do find value that if they are fairly good in uni that they will have some of the basics concreted into their minds which helps a lot vs someone who has no formal training and has followed bad habits for a long time which are difficult to break. Either way I will weigh up possible candidates and feed them a stream of work so that if it doesn't work out or are too slow that I can move in and take over some/all of the work until I can rectify the situation.

The main focus now is to move some/all of the workload from myself to someone else so I can get some free time back while growing my business at the same time and ultimately bring in larger profits. Also with more free time I can focus on bringing in the work and growing the business while someone can help handle the actual workload.

Vampire, why don't you hire an honours/masters/PhD student in Computer Science part-time to work on this, with an option for them joining full time following their graduation? That's the approach I've taken with my organisation which has worked well.

Are you me? Exactly the route I've chosen to go for now until I can build up the revenue to pay them better and then take on people with experience in addition.

Thanks for all the comments :)
