Fair Usuage

Okay, this is a question I would like to ask. If there was no cap on a service what would be deemed fair usuage in MyADSL's eyes. Please dont give insane high figures if you dont have a reason to backup the amount. Thanks
 
I would base it on line speed. So 20GB for 384, 30GB for 512 and 45GB for 1024
 
I guess it really depends on the type of user.

The casual users that just check e-mail and browse the web shouldn't really need more than 3 or 4 GB. However, I must say that they are not really taking advantage of all that the internet has to offer.

On the other hand, the harcore users who do take full advantage of all the internet's capabilities, like file sharing, P2P, online gaming, audio and video streaming, VOIP, etc. etc. etc. can easily consume 30-50 GB if not more.

Every month I have to refrain myself from downloading stuff (e.g. a new demo) because I don't want to go over my cap. But if there was no cap, I would surely do a lot more.

But the big problem is not only the cap, but also the shaping. These two limitations are really holding everyone back from really enjoying all the advantages that the internet can offer.

For example, I quit online gaming because of the shaping issue, otherwise I would be still going at it. Although there are good options to bypass the shaping, like Openweb and Nukecap, they are only second best options. There should be no shaping to begin with. Everyone should be able to freely use their connection without these limitations.
 
100GB. And I do have a reason to backup the amount. Anything below that is considered a rip-off in the UK.
 
But this isnt the Uk and they do also have 40gb accounts there that arent a rip off, thy can be offered for alot cheaper than something that is uncapped.

Also, they ge tcheaper bandwidth,they just have better built up infrastructure tha nus. That number is unrealistic (in SA), sorry.

Id say 30GB, thats tons to downlaod with and obviously enough for everything else. Most people dont even bother with downloading media or most stuff off p2p's. Thats why it doesnt make sense for an SA company to give big caps, on the mopst part they dont have to and very few people are worried.

Yes that could be about 50GB if something faster comes out though.
 
I don't think there lacks anything with our infrastructure. Yes it's unrealistic to expect anything above 30GB local in the short term, but that isn't the point of this thread. This is about what is fair and don't forget that what they in the UK consider expensive anyone of us will take at any time without even blinking an eyelid. The only reason we don't have the isps here offering anything more than 30GB is because the price is artificially inflated. I think that 100GB is very fair, as for actually getting it that would be very unlikely. But if bandwidth prices were cost based then I have no doubt we would actually have it and even pay less for it than we would now.
 
30GB with the current line speeds is good for now. However if this counrty want services like "video on demand" and "pay TV" 100GB is not going to cut it.
 
Can't even hit 3Gig

On my 384 account & Pay per Gig with Web Africa, I can’t even hit 3 Gigs, let alone 30!
4 PC’s networked via Netgear ADSL Firewall/Router
I work from home mostly and listen to streaming audio when not surfing.
I download and upload quite a bit. (Trading, MP3’s, PDF’s, etc).
Wify spends hours on VOIP and daughter’s forever on KTV/National Geographic/SOG (some online game).
Monthly stats (in GB) since going to ADSL:
2005
Aug – 0.8 Sep – 2.2 Oct – 2.9 Nov – 1.9 Dec – 2.0
2006
Jan – 0.6 Feb – 1.3 Mar – 2.3 Apr – 1.4 May (so far) – 1.4

My working day starts at around 09h00 and ends at around 23h00 to 02h00 with gaps in between (Help with Homework, Time with Wify, Surfing in Summer, sex, etc…)

I can’t see myself hitting even 5 Gig and consider my usage as above “normal” for a forty-something geek.
I am aware that there are users/businesses that maintain all sorts of databases, websites, etc that uses a couple of Gig more but I’m battling to understand the kind of usage that warrants 50, 100 or more Gigs.

Ah-well…’tis a beautiful day in Gonubie – think I’ll take the dogs for a walk on the beach and ponder the matter…
 
Thats the point, for Telkom or anyone providing broadband is SA it doesnt make sense to give higher caps than about 3-5GB. Most home users wont even use as much as MacPhallus..

So why bother trying to get 30gigs of bandwidth for ewvery customer when most wont use it, you can just provide a much "cheaper" service which is actually giving you huge profits and then say that if caps were raised it would be unfeasable. You have to understand that too a big company that is interested in the bulk of their subscribers, a few hundred or thousand people that want to download 100GB of p2p crap becuase they could do it in the UK just dont matter.

I would also love 100GB as a cap, but its not going to happen.

What I think is reasonable for SA onc eagain is about 30GB, there is no pay-TV servic eyet, but from their trials with it, they seem to provide the service almost seperatley from your ADSL usage.
 
See what you do in an ideal situation is you say: Unlimited Bandwidth... this makes the high-end users happy (they download huge amounts) and has little or no effect on the low-end users :)
 
The problem currently is that most of our isps don't make a very large profit and some of them take losses all the time. Despite what people think the isp market is actually very competitive. It's the high baseline cost of bandwidth in this country that prevents the isps from offering 100GB. When the cost of bankwidth is reduced to an acceptible level we will see the isps trampling over each other to provide higher caps. It's happening everywhere else in the world and I see no reason that it won't happen here in the long run. We don't even have to ask for higher caps. It's something that the isps will want to give in order to attract customers. We'll talk again in about 5 years time when almost every isp will be offering unlimited bandwidth.
 
Ya i think they should do it according to your line speed

192k - 20gigs
384k - 35gigs
512k - 50gigs
1024k - 100gigs

But then again it will not happen anytime soon...

So ya we can keep dreaming :)

Yes Freaksta - BW really is that expensive - thanks to the artificially high price set by telkom - who control 98% of the connectivity in and out of the country.

And fair use? How would we know on our measly 3 gigs a month??! Give us a 100 gigs a month then we'll tell you.
