Family Digital Camera question

I'm looking to get the family a "starter" camera to capture moments, some basic video etc, so this is not an in depth technical question so please no flaming :D

The two i have found that look interesting:

Is the R300 worth the Kodak over the Canon?
 
So even though the Canon gives up a megapixel to the Kodak you would say my best bet would be the Canon?
 
The Makro special beats out the SACamera xmas special on the same camera.

So i guess i'm sold on it!
 
dpreview is pretty good in terms of the reviews.

On that size sensor less MP might even be a bonus when it comes to noise.
 
If i look at it this way:

Nikon Coolpix L16 = R999
UNIROSS Hybrio 7 Hour Charger = R149
Lexar 4GB SDHC Memory Card = R199

Total cost = R1347

About R50 cheaper than the Canon, would anyone take the Canon still?
 
I have read that the following would be better option(s)

Canon A570IS or A590IS
Samsung S85
Panasonic LS75 or LS80

Bah, who thought photography would be so complex :)
 
Ye, i saw that,

Any offline retailers you know of selling the A570 or Samsung or Panasonic?

This looks like a great deal (L16 compared to the L18) from Foto Discount World?
