Anyone have any recommendations as to what to get?

I tried to use this free MyHeritage and - unless I'm wrong - it doesn't seem to search databases and get any info unless you pay.

I'm hesitant to pay incase its crap

Be careful. Some of these sites just want to harvest your name to add to their database of potential relatives in their client search database.

I didn't and don't intend on getting family tree software, but I use Geni, its a website where you can enter all family members DOB and email addresses and organise the tree by adding family members by relationship and it gives weekly emails for birthdays, anniversaries.

Mr C - but then you need to know a little of your family tree?

I don't currently know too much :/

If you have for example a cousins email addy, he can invited and put all his other family members details in and they get invited. Best is to get a senior member to plug in all the big gaps. It works for me.
