Fan case mod

Some help plz.

So i got a 300mm fan thats actually used on a car. Fan fan specs is 12v, 80 watt.

So ive done a little calculating and with max speed the fan will be drawing 6.67 amps. If i add a linear resister of say 120 ohm to it i can bring the amps down to about 0.1 amps.

I would love to use it on my case and get a very low rpm on it so that its nice and quiet.

Will this work or am i going to fry my PSU?
 
I've seen some mods where okes used classic car radiators for water cooling. Sure they must have used an external PSU.

How many rpm will this fan run at? I reckon your PSU could struggle a bit...
 
The thing is i dunno.

My main prob is the amount of amps the fan is pulling. Iam not a electronic eng but as i understand the calculation amp=volts/resistance i should be able to do it.

Just dont wanna fry my love PSU.
 
That fan is likely to be much heavier and heavier duty. PC case fans are light and easy to get spinning. That thing is going to take some juice to get going.
 
Ok, if anyone got the same idea you can forget it. The "pod" which gives you the resistance is getting way to hot. But ya, if you don't try you never know:)
 
not being a grammar nazi, but the word is "pot"..short for potentiometer. and if it is really being asked to dissipate 6 or so amps then it will get moerse hot and then commit suicide and the magic smoke will come out. you need a massive resistor, and a heatsink on it, to achieve what you want.

normal itty-bitty resistor are like 1/4 watt...put that into your equation and see how many watts you will need.

also the fan wont spin up with such low current coming into it. but a bad idea, but well done for trying it yourself and learning this way
